Garden Parties and Flower Cupcakes

This weekend it is the birthday of my son and one of my best friends.  Over the years I have thrown them parties and made them special treats.  There are no big parties planned this year, but I do have a few treats in the works.  In honor of their big day, I thought I would re-share some party ideas I have done in the past starting with my friends big birthday.

Garden Party Table, Flower Pot Favors

When my friend hit a milestone birthday a few years ago, I planned the party.  I did not want to make fun of her age, because I am a couple of years younger than her. I knew that if I was nice to her, she would be nice to me when the time came. (which will be this year!)   We kind of had a duel theme, which was a Garden Party and Spring Chick.  (she was not old, but still a spring chicken!)

On the main table we had a pretty vase filed with flower and mini Flower Pot Favors filled with candy.  I had found these mini pots at the dollar store in packages of 3 for $1.

DIY Flower Pot Topiaries

Make your own flower topiary

We also made several Flower Topiaries to decorate the party area.  They were a perfect fit for our Garden Party theme.  Notice there is also a little chick in the picture.

I had made a Cupcake Stand using candlesticks and plates from the dollar store to hold the Spring Chick cupcakes.

Flower Cupcakes with Gum Drop Flowers

The following year for her birthday I made her these Flower Cupcakes.  They turned out so pretty and would also make a great gift for Mother's Day coming up in a few days.

This year she would like me to make something with chocolate and cherry.  I am not sure exactly what I am making yet, but look for it very soon!

Chocolate Butterfly Cake - Feature of the Day

I love how pretty the chocolate butterflies look on this cake made by Bonnie of the The Pin Junkie. She has a great tutorial that shows you how you can make them yourself.  I think they would be great to use at a garden party or flower themed party.   Thank you so much for linking up your beautiful butterflies to Dare to Share  Bonnie!

Garden Party

The party we had been planning for Operation Birthday had finally arrived.   We went with a Garden Party/Spring Chick theme.   The idea behind the chicks was that  this was a milestone birthday, and my friend is STILL  a spring chick. It was much more uplifting than an Over the Hill type of theme.

Garden Party Table Decor, Topiary, Flower Pot Favors

We decorated the night before the party.  The green table cover needed some extra color so I used paper streamers to make an accent.  You can see how I made it here.    I placed my two topiaries on each end of the table.   You can how to make them  here   I had planned on painting flowers on a vase I got at the thrift store, but ran out of time.  It was a pretty pink color which matched the colors, so I still used it in the center of the table.

painted pots, candy dishes, favors

We added the flower pot favors , filled with spring colored jellybeans.

flower crafts

I used the idea  I saw by A Glimpse Inside to make flower garland.

We hung paper lanterns  and some more flowers over the bar where the food was located.

The menu was light

Homemade Chicken Salad

Pasta Salad

Tortillas with fruit salsa

Spring Chicks, Chick Cupcakes,

and Spring Chick cupcakes

To remember who attended this special birthday we made a singing frame.

We included her invitation (the girls), and embellished the with flowers and colorful "chick" letters.

During the party, all of the guests signed the matting and now R has a memento that she can hang up.

Somehow I missed taking a picture of the Spa station.   We had two rocking chairs and a rolling cart.  On the rolling cart we had a parafin bath where guests could dip their hands in was.  We also had a foot massager where guests could enjoy relaxing their feet.  The spa station was a HUGE hit with the guests.

This was the perfect party for a great friend..  Happy Birthday R!!

Table Cover Accents

To add something extra  to a plain table cover,  you will be using streamers in the colors of your theme.  You can use as many or as few colors as you would like,  depending on the look you prefer.  I decided to go with only 2 colors.

The table we were using was very long so I adapted an idea I saw on The Nate Show  to only do part of the table.  If your table is smalller you could add a lot more rows.  If are covering a smaller table you can see in this picture link  how to cover a smaller table.

In this picture I lined up 3 lines on each side of the table.

Weaving yellow streamer thru the pink streamer, I got a pretty weave pattern on the four corners of the table.

I then placed our flower centerpieces inside the weaved area for the finished look.

I will be linking this idea up.  Make sure to check my linky party page for all the great websites including the I heart Naptime  Craft O Maniac and Today's Creative

Flower Pot Favors

I made flower pot favors for the Garden Themed party that we are having for Operation Birthday.   I first had the idea when I found 3 pk mini flower pots at the Dollar Store a few weeks ago.

Each flower pot is 2-3 inches high and about 2 inches wide.

I painted the flowers freehand, but you could lightly draw a flower on the pot before painting if desired.   I first painted the bottom color of each flower in either pink, yellow or purple.  I started with one petal and worked my way around until I had a flower that looked like..

I liked the look of the extra paint because it gave the flowers texture.

I didnt realized until I downloaded my pics that I used different colors as examples.  I worked on painting a little bit at a time over 2 days.    After the base flower was dry,  I added a smaller flower in a cooridinating color.

When that layer was dry,  I painted then center and a few small lines.

The next step is to use green tissue paper to make the grass.   I found green tissue paper on clearance at Target but they also have it at the dollar store for only $1 a package.  I used a bowl that was about 6 inches across and traced around it  for my circle.

Make small snips all around the circle.
Place the circle inside the pot and arrange it so it mimics the look of grass growing out of the pot.

Add your favorite candy.   I do not have the candy on hand that we plan on using so I had to "borrow" some from one of my kids recent Awana carnival bags..

Each flower pot favor cost less than .50 each to make.
