Watermelon Birthday Party

Recently I asked my boyfriend's daughter if she would like to have a birthday party.  She was excited about the idea, so I took her to the Dollar Tree to pick a theme and get some ideas.  We were in the seasonal party item aisle, when she fell in love with the watermelon theme.  I am so glad that she did.  They had so many great items, and my mind exploded with ideas.

Seriously, how cute are these watermelon plates and napkins?  I have to admit, I realized when  I was writing this post that I did not get a good picture of them before or during the party.  I snuck downstairs so I could get a picture of them without the dogs knowing so they wouldn't go crazy.  ;)

Some of the supplies we found were large watermelon balloons, wooden sweet summer signs, watermelon and lemon paper fans, and paper lanterns in complimentary colors.

One of my favorite items in the party section are the number balloons that I buy for every birthday.   I hung them over the dining room table, and added red and pink streamers.

I also made some watermelon themed crafts with items I found at the Dollar Tree to use at the party.

I love how this placemat turned out.  I used a red circle placemat and painted on the seeds and green border.

This watermelon plate is painted on a Dollar Tree pizza pan. If you make one, make sure you seal it after painting.

Here is a good comparison of the size.  The placemat is bigger than the pizza pan.

I also found this pinkish red serving bowl that reminded me of watermelon, so I painted seeds on the sides.

I made some watermelon themed desserts which were a big hit.  I shaped Rice Krispie treats to look like watermelon slices and chunks, and added mini chocolate chips for the seeds.

f
I made watermelon cupcakes that were so yummy!  I added a few drops of green food coloring to white vanilla cake and frosted it with pink frosting.

Our watermelon themed jello was made from watermelon (pink) jello, and lime (green) jello. While it did not work out exactly as planned, it tasted good. I got so busy setting up the party that I forgot to add the blueberry seeds before the jello fully set.

We had the party on the 4th of July, so I pulled out my 4th of July cooler for the watermelon drinks.

Just another random picture of our treats

In addition to our watermelon treats we had a  a fruit/4th of July birthday cake.  I used an angel food cake, and added strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream.

The birthday girl's gift was also completely watermelon theme.  I painted a green bowl from the party section, and filled it entirely with watermelon items I found in the store. I will be sharing another post on the gift basket this week.

UPDATED: You can find the link to the watermelon gift basket here.

I was a fun and memorable party!  The birthday girl was happy, and it was great day.

Summer Party Ideas - Watermelon

Later this month both my daughter, and my boyfriend's daughter are having a birthday. Last weekend I asked my boyfriend's daughter if she would like to have a small birthday party.  She was excited about the idea.  Originally I thought we would go with the ice cream theme, but when I took her to the Dollar Tree, she fell in the love with the idea of a Watermelon Party.  The Dollar Tree still has a lot of their summer party supplies available, but not for too much longer.  In this post I am going to share what supplies that we found, and in a later post I will share more about the party.

Here are the supplies she picked out..

They had two different plate designs with the watermelon theme.   I love the look of the sliced watermelon (upper right) but the plates are on the small side. So also like the bigger square plates, so we got those too.  We can use the square plates for the food, and the slice plates for side dishes or dessert.  The triangle slices are the napkins.

We also picked out two different types of table coverings.  The bigger one has the watermelon slices and other fruit, and a smaller, round pink one.  I am not sure if we will use the pink one, but we planning to have the party outside so we can probably find some sort of use for it.

She loved the round watermelon bowl. Most likely we are going to use it to serve, you guessed it, watermelon. I could only find two of the glasses (that are actually plastic)   I think I might use those as a centerpiece or in some decorative way.

She really wanted to the paper lanterns.  We went ahead and got all three colors available because they match the colors of our plates and table covering.

They had cute themed decor as well. I am not sure what we are going to do with these items yet, but I am sure we will decide on something.

We found a few other random items that matched our theme.  I am going to put the watermelon candy in a themed gift basket for her. She loves the flowers on the extra package of napkins. They also matched out color scheme.  When I saw the inside of the Tropical Party coloring book I HAD TO HAVE IT.  It is seriously one of the cutest coloring books I have ever seen.

They have pictures of fruit, and adorable animals doing all kind of summer activities. Have you ever seen a slice of watermelon hanging out on the beach eating a piece of watermelon?  I know I haven't.

Or how about a sloth mermaid?  I know that does not match our theme, but I had to share the cuteness.

Now that we have most of our supplies, it is time to plan our menu, and how we plan to decorate.  Stay tuned for more on our watermelon party.

Remember if you are planning a party, and not able to find the supplies you want in store, they have an entire party supply section where you can buy online and ship free to the store!  Check online often, because seasonal themes are only available for a limited time.    They also have videos with party ideas and inspiration on the Dollar Tree website. Be sure to check it out.

Summer Party Ideas - Pink Flamingos

This post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

I stopped by the Dollar Tree today I was so excited to see an entire aisle dedicated to summer.  They had pretty much anything you could think for a summer party, such as luau items, tiki items, fruit themed items, and PINK flamingo items.  There were so many flamingo themed items it gave me idea. Why not show ideas for a pink flaming party.  I will be sharing several summer party themes over the next couple of months so stay tuned for more summer ideas.   BTW I found and  bought the letterboard and flamingos today at the Dollar Tree too.

A big section of the aisle had colorful summer themed signs. I instantly fell in love with several of them.

Apparently there are flamingos in paradise..

I think these signs are cute. While I only occasionally have a fruity drink, it is 5 o'clock somewhere. These signs would look for a beach/tiki theme.

I found this flip flop shaped flamingo sign, and two small flamingos, and then I noticed how many flamingo items there actually were.

They have a flamingo dinnerware set with plates and bowls.  There flamingo serving trays, and large serving bowls.  I found paper plates, straws, decorations, dish towels, and chair cushions. You could even wear a couple different kinds of flamingo glasses on your face.   There was not enough room in the cart to show all of the flamingo party items I found.

Are you looking for a giant flamingo cut out?  They have it.  They also have these super fun flamingo tiki signs.

I liked these signs so much, they came home with me.

You can find all of these flamingo items, and a lot more like these 13.5" plastic flamingos on DollarTree.com and have your items sent free to your local store. (look in summer party section)

Here are a few more great flamingo items you might also find perfect for your summer party.

How about a Jumbo Inflatable Flamingo Pool Float for only $9.99

A set of 6 large Luau Plastic Yard Glasses

Flamingo Custom Banner (52" x 17")

A set of 12 inflatable flamingo drink holders

DIY Pallet Tiki Bar - Feature of the Day

I have summer on the brain.. we have just a few more days until summer break, and I can't wait! When I saw this Easy Pallet Tiki Bar by Crafty in Crosby, it screamed summer to me.   While we do not have a pool, I can think of other fun ways to use one.    It would be perfect at beach party, luau, and many other summer themed parties. It is a great way to have refreshments while in the pool.  If you have access to free pallets, you can put one together rather cheaply. Be sure to stop by Crafty in Crosby to see how to make your easy pallet tiki bar .  Thank you so much Leah and Jeanette for linking up this great idea to Dare to Share!
