Crafts For Kids While Stuck At Home (Crafting with Kara)

My daughter has always been a creator.  She loves to design, draw, bake and make (Hmm, I wonder who she got that from 😄)  Several years ago when Kyle started his Cooking with Kyle series, she started her own series Crafting with Kara. 

One of her first crafts she shared on the blog was how to make was this tissue paper butterfly It is not that difficult to make, and you probably have all the supplies already at home.   During this spring instead, maybe bring a little bit of nature inside. 

If you kids like to play with clay, in this post she shows how to make an Angry Bird.  The blue penguin is not in the tutorial but for some reason in the picture.

Kara is actually semi famous for these Cardboard Tube Flowers.  She saw a picture of them in a magazine and then her tutorial was featured in an ebook about free crafts for kids. 

Another spring craft she shared was how to make a Flower Pot Nest

She made this bunny craft out of a giant pipe cleaner and a few basic crafts supplies. It might be a good one to try with it being almost Easter. 

This post is a little different than most.  Here she shows how she and her girl scout troop made Blankets for Cancer.

We still use this Patriotic Wreath every summer for Memorial Day and 4th of July.  Here a few more she made later.

This rainbow flower is one of my favorite crafts she has made. It is also very timely since everyone is at home using a lot of toilet paper, and it is made out of cardboard tubes. 

I know it is not Thanksgiving, but one of her most ambitious crafts was this Turkey Tutorial.  I also remember that one of our cats was fascinated with it, and liked to lick the feathers.  LOL

Crafting with Kara - Valentine's Day Treats

This weekend Kara asked me if she could use some of my baking supplies to make some treats.  I told her yes, but there was one catch, she had to take pictures of anything she made.  She had a hard time deciding what she wanted to make.  She knew she wanted to use strawberries, because we had recently bought some.  She then came across a bag of Red Velvet Candy melts, so she decided to make Valentine's Day treats. 

She melted candy melts in the microwave using the 30 second method.  She had that tube of red icing in the picture, because she thought she was going to use it, but then decided not too.  Do you notice that sticker on the bag of candy melts?   I did that last summer when I found out  How to Figure Out if Your Wilton Candy Melts have Expired. 

Once she melted the Red Velvet candy melts, she dipped in strawberries, marshmallows, and chocolate cookies. 

She laid the treats on parchment paper, and decorated with sprinkles and candy hearts. She even made a few heart shaped treats from the extra candy melts.  

Her treats definitely won't make it until Valentine's Day.  Just a little while after this picture was taken, all of the treats were gone.  I guess she will just have to make some more!

Crafting with Kara Halloween Cupcakes

It's been a little while since we have had a Crafting with Kara.  She has many ideas she plans on doing, but with all her activities and school, she has not had the chance. I guess she takes after her mother on that one.  This week I made some cupcakes, but then did not have a lot of time to decorate them.  I asked Kara if she would like to decorate them for Halloween.  She said she would love to.  Here are her designs..

Crafting with Kara- Wishing Stars

My girls recently found a new thing to pass the time. My oldest read somewhere that if you make 100 origami stars with a wish inside, one of the wishes will come true.  Since then I have been finding paper and stars all over the house.   Luckily for them, I have a huge stash of scrapbook paper to choose from.

Crafting with Kara- Cardboard Tube Flowers

We finally had the chance with Kara's busy schedule to fit in another installment of Crafting with Kara. This week she thought it would be fun to try a craft she saw in the March issue of Family Fun.  Using just a few supplies, she made vase filled with spring flowers.

The supplies you will need to make this craft are; one toilet paper tube per flower, and an extra tube if you want to make leaves, paint, bamboo skewers, and tissue paper.

Paint the tubes in your desired flower  colors.  If making leaves, paint one of the tubes green 

 Both the inside and the outside of the tubes need to be painted. We found it to be easier to paint the inside after cutting it.  Paint the skewers green, these will be the stems. 

Mark off the center inch of the tube 

Mom helped with this step.  Cut slits up to the mark off point on both sides of the tube. There should be about 1 inch of tube left uncut. 

Once the tube was cut, it was easier to reach inside the tube.  She also painted all of the petals on both sides of the tube. 

To make the leaves, flatten the green tube, and cut into strips. 

Once all the flowers are dry, stuff the centers with different colors of tissue paper. 

Using a push pin, make a small hole. (this is another step that might need to be done by the parent) 

Insert the pointed end of the skewer into the hole.  You might use a little bit of glue to keep it in place, but we did not have to. 

Because of the vase Kara decided to use, we did not add the leaves this time.

We found the pretty purple vase at the dollar store.  They sold other colors like pink, yellow and blue as well.   One thing that I love about these flowers is they will stay pretty a lot longer than real ones. They would make a nice Mother's Day gift or just a spring decor pick me up.
