Throwback Thursday - Saving Money on Groceries

It seems everywhere you look on Thursday, you find Throwback Thursday pictures.  Recently one of our restaurants in the Midwest called Olga's Kitchen took it one step farther. Each Thursday they are now offering some of their menu items at throwback prices.. Genius!  Today it was 1991, and we could get a Orange Cream Cooler for only $1.75 and a few other items for several dollars off.  We also enjoyed listening to early 90s music. It's  hard to believe it has already been 23 years!

Since today was all about saving money for me, I thought  my post How to Save Money on Groceries from January 2013,  would be a good one to throwback to.  In this post I shared my tips on how to realistically use coupons, and save money on food for your family.  If you would like to save at least 30% on your food bill, be sure to check it out.

How to Save Money Christmas Shopping

How to save money while Christmas shopping picture

Today the practical tip side of me wants to post about one of my favorite subjects...  Shopping!  Many years ago, you would often find me in the mall with my oldest at least 1-2 times a month.  She has loved to shop with me, even when she was a baby in a stroller.  While I shopped the sales, I did not save as much as I could.   Flash forward to 2008. The economy crashed, and our financial situation changed. There was just not enough money for monthly mall visits.  We still needed things like groceries and clothes, since having three kids who grow like weeds still need to be fed and dressed. It was at that time that I began taking saving money seriously. I started using coupons while grocery shopping on almost every trip.  I planned ahead and made a list.  When we ate out, we ate at restaurants that had coupons and rewards programs like Fridays.  I used as many coupons as I could while shopping for clothes, shoes and more.

My favorite store to shop for Christmas presents so far this year, has got to be Kohls.  One reason is because in the last month, they have basically given me $95 to shop, on top of their sales, and coupon savings.  When you have a Kohls charge card, you receive coupons sometimes as high as 30% in the mail every few weeks.  They also will occasionally send you $10 and $5 promo cards from time to time.  In October they sent me a  $10 promo code for my birthday.  It was good for the entire month of October. Also for  my birthday at the end of the month  I was sent 2 Kohls gift cards. (one from my dad, and one from my BF)  In October, Kohls  sent  me another $10 promo card for having a Kohls charge when they sent the monthly coupons.

On Halloween, I took my daughter shopping so we could use our gift cards, and my promo cards.  I bought a few shirts, a pair of yoga pants, and a $5 cookbook. The total came to $56.61 after coupon and one of the $10 promos. I used one of my Kohls gift cards, and an older one that still had an $18.86 balance. I also earned $10 in Kohls cash.   I paid only $12.76 out of my pocket, and saved $65.59.  I gave my daughter my other $10 promo card and a 15% coupon.  She got a sweatshirt, and a pair of yoga pants for only $16.21. She had a $25 gift card, and still has a balance on it!

In November, I received another  $5 promo card, and a 30% off coupon. (score!)  I went to the Veterans Day sale, to use my other birthday gift card and to buy a few presents that were on sale that day. I was able to buy myself two sweaters, and a purse with my gift card and 30% coupon. I also bought a sweatshirt, a shirt and a stuffed hedgehog for Kara, a 2nd purse on clearance, and a shirt for both Kristina and Kyle. The 30% coupon alone knocked $40 off my total. After my gift card,  coupon, $5 promo and $10 Kohls cash, I paid only $50.78, and walked away with another $10 in Kohls cash.  (It would have been $20, but I was about $5 short of the next payout)

Before my 30%  coupon expired, I took my oldest back to Kohls so she could  pick out a few Christmas presents. At almost 17, she is difficult to buy for when it comes to clothes.  She picked out a few things, and I picked up a few more presents. I saved another $45.71 with my coupon, and walked away with another $20 in Kohls cash.

Last Friday they had several items I wanted to buy my son on sale during their Power Hours sale.  I bought him a Lions jersey, sleep pants, and a Detroit Tigers T shirt.  I then bought several things for Kara.  A dress for 55% off, a ruffled owl top, a dance shirt, three clearance tee shirts and a 3 pack of earrings. I found a yellow  tank top for only $3.60 (I love tanks!). I also picked up 5 Woodland ornaments for only $2.24 each for our Woodland themed tree that we will be putting up this weekend. After my $20 Kohls cash, and a 20% coupon, I spent only $88.

I had not planned on buying anything else at Kohls for awhile, but I found out this morning that they have their Black Friday prices online NOW.  You can also save 15% off with their code BLACKFRI AND earn $15 per $50 spent.  There were a few deals that I could not pass up.  I am in need of  a new winter coat.  I bought my last one 7 or 8 years ago, and it is really starting to show wear.   The picture of the ZeroXposur  purple coat   in the picture above is $180 regular price. It is on sale now for only $59.99!   After the 15% coupon, the price is $50.99, which also means I will get another $15 in Kohls cash. Final price for the coat was $35.99 after coupons, and Kohls cash. A 80% savings!!   Another great deal is the boots in the picture.  A small piece of trivia.   I also LOVE boots. I wear the same size shoes as both of my girls. We can easily share shoes if needed. These super cute fringe boots are a girls size 5. They are normally $59.99, but are on  sale now for only $14.99. A girls size 5 converts to a woman's 7, which means at least one of us will be able to wear them. After the 15% coupon, they are only $12.74 before tax. Some of the other great deals I found are a sleep set for Kristina. It is normally $30.00 on sale for $9.99 ($8.50 after coupon), a Lions sweatshirt for Kyle normally $35, on sale for $18.99. ($16.14 after coupon), a woodland themed Big One plush throw normally $39.99 for kara, on sale for $8.99 ($7.64 after coupon) smaller fleece throws in different themes normally $13.99 for only $3.99 ($3.24 after coupon)  a Christmas themed throw rug for only $3.99 ($3.24 after coupon)   That total saved with the coupon code today was $19.34, bringing  the total to  just over $100 for a winter coat, boots and all the other items. Considering the coat was originally almost $200, I was very happy about that.  Full price what I bought today would have been $401.94. My savings for today on the bottom of the receipt $273.03

Out of curiosity, I added up the totals for the last month. I normally do not go shopping this many times in one month, but with my birthday and the holidays, it  has worked out that way.

Money given to me by  Kohls  in Kohls cash and promo cards, $95

Money saved by using Kohls coupons on every visit $135.16

Money saved with sales prices on the bottom of the receipts $897.68.

My final savings total was 70% off.

If you want to save money too, I will be sharing other great deals that I find in the upcoming weeks.  Be sure to check my Deal and Coupons page  here on the blog , and Facebook page to keep up with the latest deals.

Ways to Save at Target You Might Not Know About

Disclosure: This post  contains an affiliate links

Our local Target store recently remodeled, adding a much larger grocery section to the store. You don't know how happy that makes me since I am in Target quite often.  It makes it super easy to pick up things I need without having to go to another store.  I also love that at Target you can save money off your groceries and other household items FIVE different ways all at the same time.  I can't think of any other store that allows you  to do that.

Can't Miss Back to School Deals

You may be wondering why I have been on the quiet side the last few days.  I have been busy getting my three kids ready for school.  This week we are having back to school registration days, girl scout planning meetings, appointments, and last minute shopping to do.  I believe my kids are pretty much ready now.  I have been buying on sale, and stocking up on basic supplies all summer.  The best way to shop for school supplies is to watch the sales flyers, and buy the items at their best price.  I have come across some can't miss back to school deals this week, so I thought I would share them in a blog post.

Sorry about the glare in this picture. It was from the light over our kitchen table.  Staples has been one of my go to stores for supplies this summer. Each week they have offered 3-5 loss leaders at rock bottom prices.  We are always in need of scissors.  We have at least 5 or 6 pairs, but I swear they have legs because they are constantly wandering off.  This week's deal of 7" all purpose scissors at only .50 each was a can't miss.  They are normally $5.00 each. There is a limit of 2 per day.   I also picked up a couple packs of Paper Mate magic rub erasers. They are also only .50 this week. with a limit of two. They are normally $3.00 each.  Composition books are normally $1 each.  This week you can get 3 at only.10 each. The only catch with the .10 books is you need to spend $5. We spent it on a couple of items we needed, a pencil sharpener, and rubber bands.   It is well worth though, because of the coupon you get at checkout.

At every transaction that I have made the last couple of weeks, I have received a $10 off $30 coupon for Kohls. What makes this coupon even better is it can be used
TOGETHER with other  Kohls special deals and coupons. I will share more about that in a minute.

When we were out tonight, we also stopped at Rite Aid. They have a coupon in the ad that can be used on select back to school items that are on sale for .50.  Items such as 8 Ct Crayola Crayons, 12 oz boxes of chalk, Avery Big Tabs,  Mead Comp Books, Paper Portfolios, highlighters and more.  The in ad coupon is $1 off of 2, making them free with a Rite Aid Wellness Card.  We chose two more composition books as our free items.  With your Wellness Card, you can also pick up small bottles of Wet and Wild nail polish for only .69.   There were a couple more deals I was hoping to get, but they were sold out.

On Monday night we made a stop at JCPennys.  There has been several $10 off of  $25 coupons in the ads the last couple of weeks. We had one in this past weekend's ad  that was expiring on Monday. (keep an eye out in case there are more coupons in the upcoming weekend)  In the junior section, I found camis, and tanks on clearance for only $2.99 each. (regular price $8)  Kara found a couple more shirts she liked on clearance.  The butterfly T-shirt was only $4, (regular price $10) and the striped double shirt was $8.99. (regular price $18)  Since we had the coupon, we got all  7 shirts for only $19.02.  The price per cami/tank was only $1.92 each after coupon, which is a great stock up price.

We then went over to Kohls.  Kara is at that in between age where it can be hard to find clothes.  She is too small for juniors, but too old for some of the styles in the girls section.  She does enjoy Kohls, because they usually have a good selection of styles that are appropriate for older tweens.   We did spend a bit more at Kohls, but overall still had excellent savings.   Kara picked out a sweater, a T- shirt with vest attached, a ruffled shirt that will be pretty for picture day, 2 Tee shirts on clearance, a sweatshirt, something she won't let me mention or take a picture of, and a dress.   We got a great deal on the dress. It was originally $58. It was on clearance for 80% off for only $11.60. After coupons, we got it for only $9!  It even worked out that it was a size bigger than she normally wears so she should be able to wear it for quite awhile.    Kyle got 2 Helix T-Shirts, a Tony Hawk T-Shirt, and a Tek Gear Shirt.  I picked up for myself the orange T-shirt and the $5 Kids Treats book. All together the subtotal was $163.93 before coupons. Not too bad for 14 clothing items.  We saved $10 with one of the Staples coupons, and then another $22.34 with a 15% Kohls coupon. The final price was $139.49, with a savings of $193.41.

My Savings by the Number
Staples         $16.70
Rite Aid        $2.60
JCPenny's    $48.98
Kohls             $193.41
                      ---------------
                       $261.69

Not to bad for just a couple of hours of shopping!

Kroger 50% Plus Deals

As you know, one of my goals this year was to save money. I was very happy to be $10 under budget for January, and now have a great start for February. If you have a Kroger store near you, they have several popular items 50% off this week.  When you also use a coupon, you can find items for a fraction of the price.  Everything in the picture, I got for more than 50% off.

Full price Ken's salad dressing is $3.99.  It is on sale this week for $1.99, and there is a $1 off 2 coupon in the 1/13 Smart Source.   Final price for each bottle was $1.49 or 63% off.

Velvetta Skillet Meals  full price are $3.69. They are on sale this week for $1.84, and there is a $1 off 2 coupon from Coupons.com. Final price for each were $1.39 or 63% off.

Anytizers are a fun go to in our house. Full price they are $7.47.  They are on sale for $3.73, which is already an awesome price but there are also $1 off coupons in the 1/20 Smart Source. At a final price of $2.73 stock up! This will probably the only time you will see it this low at 63% off.

Birdseye Viola is also a go to meal on busy nights in our house.  They are normally $6.59, on sale this week for $3.29.  I also had a $1 coupon that I got through Smart Source.  Final price $2.29 which is 65% off.

Kraft string cheese is normally $5.99 full price. It is on sale this week for $2.99. I did not have a coupon for it so it is only 50%.  We have plans for the new tomato basil flavor for a new Cooking with Kyle recipe this week.

Dial soap is normally $1.49 each.  They are on sale for $1 each this week.  There is a $2 off of 4 coupon on Coupons.com, making each bottle .50 each or 66% off.

I could have spent $41.37 for all the items in the picture and only spent $15.77

In addition to these great deals  there is more to be found around the store.  Milk is $1.99 in my area (prices may vary) and large eggs only $1 a dozen.  This is a great week to stock up on your favorite deals.
