Ten tips on how throw an amazing party on a budget

My favorite tips to throw an amazing party on a budget

I had the opportunity to go through some older posts this morning.  Eight years ago this week I wrote a post about my tips on throwing a party on a budget. Since it has been quite awhile, and I still stand behind these tips, I thought it would be a great time to re-share the post, and update it for 2022.

First of all I am going to share with you a little secret.  Do you sometimes see beautiful themed  parties on the blogs and Pinterest, and feel in adequate because your parties don't measure up? While those pictures of parties are beautiful to look at, many of them cost a pretty penny to put together. Now the secret...  Most kids  really do not  care about all the details. They do not even notice if things are not perfect. They just want to eat the treats that are on those perfect dessert tables. They are just as happy with a cake that is a bit crooked as they are with  a high priced perfect one.  So the next time you want to throw your child a birthday party, just do the best you can. If it makes your child happy, then you had a successful party.

Tip #1 The Dollar Tree and Dollar Spot at Target have almost all the supplies you will need at a fraction of the cost of the party store. When I am planning a party, The Dollar Tree is always my very first stop. They carry plates, plastic table covers, napkins, cups, plastic silverware, themed items, streamers, trinkets, and so much more.  The Dollar Spot often carries many themed items that are perfect for goody bags, and they often go on clearance, so you can sometimes pay only .30 to .50 for each item.

Tip #2  If your child has their heart set on themed tableware, compromise, and buy one or two themed items such as the plate or napkins.   Color coordinate your themed items with plain color items.  The plates will be covered with food while they are eating , and then thrown in the trash when they are done. Wouldn't you prefer to spend $1.25 for 16 plain plates, instead of $4 for 8 just because it has a picture of a princess or ninja turtle.

Tip #3 Recycle cardboard and other items, and make your own   decorations.  It may take a little bit of time, but you can make them for very little money.  My kids and their guests have always loved the unique decor we have at our parties. I used old cardboard boxes to make a Triceratops, and a six foot T-Rex for my son's dinosaur party. As you can imagine, the boys were beyond thrilled.  I used paper mache to make the Pokeballs at our Pokemon party.  All I needed was a few balloons, some old newspaper, and  some paint.  We had to make our own falling food at our Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs party, since it was such an unique theme. We used cardboard, poster board, and card stock to make the food,  and hung them from the ceiling with thread.  I recycled a few long boxes to make the life size surf boards that we used at my daughter's Beach Bash Birthday.

Tip #4  Do not bother to buy the cardboard party hats with the elastic.   The elastic hurts, and kids really do not like them very much.  Instead why not make a hat or accessory for the kids to wear.  Not only will the kids be a lot happier to wear something fun at the party, but they can use them again when they play dress up. When my oldest was three, she had a Madeline party. All of the girls loved their yellow felt Madeline hats.  I used craft foam to make Scooby Doo ears and ribbon to make the  collar for my son's Scooby party.  My youngest was so excited to wear her tulle Tinkerbell skirt and star crown at her Tinkerbell party. I remember her wearing the skirt  for days afterwards. Guests at the unicorn party loved that they got to wear their very own unicorn horns made with a dollar store headband, felt and yarn.

Tip #5  Make up your own activities using items you already have at home.   We set up stuffed animals all over the house and backyard for the Safari party.  My son really enjoyed leading all of his friends on a Safari tour.  One of the games we play at almost all of our parties, is the Pin the Tail game.  I use poster board to make a game matching the theme.  The lion in the picture was actually used twice. It was used for both our Safari, and our Zoo party. Some of the other Pin the Tail games have been pin the tail on Pikachu, pin the hat on Madeline, pin the rocket on the moon, and  pin the cherry on the top of the sundae.  The dinosaur dig was super easy to set up. We had to do it in the garage since it was raining too hard to go to the sandbox.  We hid some dinosaur skeletons in a large box of sand.  Each of the boys had a plastic shovel and paint brush, so they could  become pint sized Paleontologists.  Using a dollar store hula hoop and some rope, I put together the perfect lasso, for our cowgirls to try and lasso the foam board horse.

Tip #6  Use props, and make your own photo booth.  I have been taking photo booth type pictures years before it became a fad.  One of my favorites  has to be the year my son turned one.  The Teletubbies were very popular then, and all of the guests were three or younger.  They all happily posed as the baby in the sun. Those photos made a really cool scrapbook page.  My daughter looks teeny next to the very large T-Rex from the dinosaur party.   I made a cardboard corral for the horse party.  Each of the girls got to have their picture taken while  sitting on Buttercup the horse that my daughter got for her birthday. (I found it for 50% off the day after Christmas. Score!)  You may be wondering what is going on in the last picture.  That is the monkey cage we used at the zoo party.  A friend of ours is a rep for a blinds company, and had many long thin boxes we could use to make the cage.  The monkey in the picture was actually a great investment several years ago when I bought it for  $10.  We have used it for four different parties. It has made an appearance at both luaus, the safari and the zoo party.

Tip #7  There is no need to waste money buying those plastic themed bags and fill them with plastic trinkets that the kids are just going to lose and break.  It is possible to make a very nice goody bag that matches your theme for not much money.  We found almost all of the items in the Beach Bash tote bag at the dollar store.  The girls decorated the flip flops with fabric scraps as their craft. The frisbees were decorated with details of the party, and they were  used as paper plate holders during lunch. Also included were a bottle of bubbles and a sun visor. Total cost for this goody bag was only $4 per person.   The brown paper bag owls were from our Woodland Party.  Inside  was a notebook with deer pictures all over the cover, a necklace and a ring. The girls also got garden pad in the shape of a frog that were on clearance for .25 each.  Total cost for this goody bag was $3 per person.  I do admit to spending more on the Art themed bag from her art party. My daughter only invited a handful of girls. She wanted the bag to be filled with art supplies. The paint palette is only $1.29 at Michaels. The flip flops, colored pencils and wooden frames were all $1 each. The girls decorated their flip flops again at this party.  The paintbrushes are from Ikea, where a pack of 5 brushes in only $1.99.  The tote bags were leftover from the Beach Bash, so they did not cost anything this time around. Total cost for these goody bags were about $6.50, but every single item in it can be used again and again.

Now some BONUS tips to use during the party

Tip #8 One thing we did at all of our parties over the years was have the birthday child sit in a special chair.  The guests should  all sit on the ground or floor so everyone can see the opening of the gifts.

Tip #9 To lessen hurt feelings, put the names of all of the guests in a cup. Draw their names one by one to determine which present to open next.  When their name is drawn they can go up and sit by the birthday child while the gift is being opened. Take a photo of the guest, birthday child and gift.  Doing this  makes it much easier to remember who gave which gift after the party. You can also send a copy of the photo to the guest in their thank you card.

Tip #10 Use a sharpie to put the guests' names or initials on as many things as you can.  There will always be someone who loses their cup, hat, and even goody bag.  Doing this will cut down on the number of cups that are used, and it will make it easier to find those lost items.

I am still using many of these tips to the present day.  While all my children and my bonus children are grown up, I am still putting together theme parties.  I definitely still go to the Dollar Tree for most of my items, and I still like to make decor like my Cinderella Tower Photo Booth. This summer we are throwing two birthday parties.  One will be a Victorian Halloween (yes in the summer, but it is what the birthday girl wants) and a Taco Fiesta birthday party.   I will be sharing both posts and printables for those parties soon!

How to make a watermelon themed gift basket

As you saw in my last post, we recently had a watermelon themed birthday party.  My gift for the birthday girl was a watermelon themed gift basket.

** This post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links

The first thing I did was look for a "basket".   I found this large green bowl that reminded me of half a watermelon. I painted a few stripes to make it look even more like a melon.  Every single item I found for this gift basket, including the bowl was found at the Dollar Tree.

I lined the bowl with red tissue paper, and then some bright pink. I could not decide which one I like better, so I used them both.

It was then time to start arranging all of the goodies.  There were many different types of watermelon candies and gum. I may have bought a few extra bags for myself to eat as well.

The Dollar Tree has a large number of different skin care products. I was very excited to find a watermelon line with cleansers, facial wipes and masks.  They work well and smell really good.

I found the large watermelon zipper pouch after I had taken the second picture which is why you see a few of the items in both pictures.  I found a melon cosmetic bag, a smaller zipper pouch, a keychain, phone accessories, and lip balm. (she loved all of them!)

I found a fun novelty glass with a wrap around straw, and a cute little banner she should hang to remind her of her birthday.

There were so many items it was hard to fit everything in, but I made it work.  Behind the basket is a large bottle of watermelon ice tea that was too big and heavy for the basket.

To hid what was inside the gift basket until it was time to open her gifts, I covered the top with more red tissue paper.

The watermelon gift basket was a BIG HIT!  I promised the birthday girl that I would not post pics of her since she hates having her picture taken so you will have to take my word for hit.  Lets just say that when empty it also make a great melon hat.  LOL!!

Watermelon Birthday Party

Recently I asked my boyfriend's daughter if she would like to have a birthday party.  She was excited about the idea, so I took her to the Dollar Tree to pick a theme and get some ideas.  We were in the seasonal party item aisle, when she fell in love with the watermelon theme.  I am so glad that she did.  They had so many great items, and my mind exploded with ideas.

Seriously, how cute are these watermelon plates and napkins?  I have to admit, I realized when  I was writing this post that I did not get a good picture of them before or during the party.  I snuck downstairs so I could get a picture of them without the dogs knowing so they wouldn't go crazy.  ;)

Some of the supplies we found were large watermelon balloons, wooden sweet summer signs, watermelon and lemon paper fans, and paper lanterns in complimentary colors.

One of my favorite items in the party section are the number balloons that I buy for every birthday.   I hung them over the dining room table, and added red and pink streamers.

I also made some watermelon themed crafts with items I found at the Dollar Tree to use at the party.

I love how this placemat turned out.  I used a red circle placemat and painted on the seeds and green border.

This watermelon plate is painted on a Dollar Tree pizza pan. If you make one, make sure you seal it after painting.

Here is a good comparison of the size.  The placemat is bigger than the pizza pan.

I also found this pinkish red serving bowl that reminded me of watermelon, so I painted seeds on the sides.

I made some watermelon themed desserts which were a big hit.  I shaped Rice Krispie treats to look like watermelon slices and chunks, and added mini chocolate chips for the seeds.

f
I made watermelon cupcakes that were so yummy!  I added a few drops of green food coloring to white vanilla cake and frosted it with pink frosting.

Our watermelon themed jello was made from watermelon (pink) jello, and lime (green) jello. While it did not work out exactly as planned, it tasted good. I got so busy setting up the party that I forgot to add the blueberry seeds before the jello fully set.

We had the party on the 4th of July, so I pulled out my 4th of July cooler for the watermelon drinks.

Just another random picture of our treats

In addition to our watermelon treats we had a  a fruit/4th of July birthday cake.  I used an angel food cake, and added strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream.

The birthday girl's gift was also completely watermelon theme.  I painted a green bowl from the party section, and filled it entirely with watermelon items I found in the store. I will be sharing another post on the gift basket this week.

UPDATED: You can find the link to the watermelon gift basket here.

I was a fun and memorable party!  The birthday girl was happy, and it was great day.

The Big Birthday Post

As I have mentioned recently, this past weekend was a pretty big day. It still does not feel real, and I am having some trouble wrapping my head around the new number.  I had a really big birthday.  Being a party planner, I had been thinking about what I wanted to do for the last several months. I knew it was not going to be a big fancy party.  It is not my style or in my budget. One thing I knew for sure is I wanted it to be with  my friends, and I wanted to dress up as my favorite princess since it was Halloween weekend   At the end of September, Oriental Trading asked if I would like to review some of their party supplies. The timing was perfect! The sent me the items for my honest review. I will be sharing what they sent me in this post as well as how we celebrated.

The party was held at the house of one of my friends.  We knew we wanted to bring some Halloween elements in, but not have it be too scary or gory.   We decided to do some Cinderella themed decor, considering I was a princess and all.  We set up a few tables for people to sit at while eating,  The one her family room was in the middle of the action.   On this table I used black table covering cut to size, and candelabra centerpieces from Oriental Trading. The white table runners I found on clearance at Target a few years ago.  I made the Cinderella pumpkins and glitter 50.  The crown was from the dollar section of Michaels. The Cinderella dresses I found at the Target dollar spot last year.  I loved how it turned out.

Here is a close up of the Candelabra Centerpiece made from foam with glow in the dark wicks.  It was not dark enough at our party to see if they glowed, but they held up very well and can be used more than once.  They come apart and can be stored flat.

I painted a few dollar store pumpkins Cinderella blue and added a ton of glitter.

I knew we would be taking a lot of pictures, so I wanted to set up a photo booth.  I used painted picture frames that we used at my daughter's art themed birthday party.  I had a few hats, and photo props that  people used for pictures.

Continuing with the Cinderella theme, the photo booth was two castle towers made with boxes and the stone wall backdrop. I will be showing how I made them in another post.  The countdown clock fan is currently on clearance, and made the perfect touch since Cinderella only had until midnight before she had to leave the ball.

Above the tower, we hung a Cinderella add an age birthday banner, which had enough space for a double digit birthday.

The girls are posing with the stick costume photo props which had mostly lips and glasses. There are many, many different themes and styles to choose from though if you are having a specific theme.

In this picture I was getting ready to blow the candles out on my cake.  In the background you can see some of the balloons from Oriental trading.  Since I was the birthday girl at this party, I was not able to take a ton of pictures like I normally do.  You may notice that I do not have pictures of the food. My friends told me they were taking over a lot of the planning, and surprised me with a lot of things, including the food.  We ate macaroni and cheese, bbq meatballs, shrimp, cheese and crackers and salad. It was all very good, but I did not get a picture.

I was also surprised with this big, yummy birthday cake.  I believe it was from Costco. It fed a lot of people and there was plenty of cake leftover.

We were able to do a multi frame group shoot with several of my closest friends. They really helped make my big day extra special.

It is time for a "BIG" Birthday Halloween PARTY!

In exactly one month I am having a "BIG" birthday and a party. I love planing birthday parties, but I do admit this one freaks me out a little. (it is a number, I have trouble saying out loud)   Since my birthday is two days before Halloween, we are planning  a Halloween themed Birthday Party for my special day.

As the birthday girl who is having the big birthday, I want to dress as something special.  I LOVE the newest version of Cinderella, and I really want her gorgeous blue gown from the ball. Oriental Trading has one on their Halloween Costume Page.  They have hundreds of costumes of all kind for men, women, kids and  even your pets. I have not ordered my gown yet, but I will be soon, and I can't wait to wear it!.

A couple of weeks ago, Oriental Trading  contacted me, and asked me if I would like to review some of their products. Talk about perfect timing! I have bought from the in the past, and I knew they had 1000s of items to choose from.  They sent me the products, and I received them within a couple of days. Since the party is not for a month, this review will be in two parts. Today I will share what I ordered, and later on I will show you how they were used at my party.  All opinions of these products are 100% my own.

This party will have a little bit of a twist instead of the usual Halloween theme.  Since we can not have the party in a real castle like Cinderella did, we are decorating the party to have a castle feel with a little bit of Halloween thrown in.  The main colors are black, silver and Cinderella blue, with a just a little bit of orange thrown in. (mainly pumpkins and other Halloween decorations)

These are going to be 3D glittery candelabra centerpieces, and they will go on the main table.  They were shipped flat, so they would not be damaged.

I am very excited with what we have planned for the photo booth.  We are going to wrap that stone wall backdrop around tall boxes to look like castle towers.  I am trying out the costume props (lips, glasses, and mustaches) and have them ready for the guests to use in their pictures. We are also going to have a few boas, crazy hats, and large wooden picture frames on hand.

Between the castle towers of the photo booth, we will be hanging the Cinderella Happy Birthday banner that has a place to put your age.  I also choose silver balloons, and a roll of silver ribbon. Not pictured is a large roll of black plastic to use for tablecloths, and other decor. The item in the middle with the arrow, is actually from their clearance supplies, but perfect for the Cinderella theme.  They are count down paper fans that have the arrows pointed to almost midnight. I picked out blue, silver and, Cinderella themed napkins that will be on the food and cake table.

In the next few weeks I will be sharing a few of the more party ideas that we are using for the party. I have some ideas for dollar store pumpkins, party trays and treats.

Are you looking for more Halloween ideas?   The Free-N-Fun Halloween site has a ton of great costume, treat and craft ideas that are for all ages and all kinds of parties.. There are several things on that site like the Monster Munch Popcorn, that I am thinking about using for my own party.
