Countdown to Halloween- Apple Candy Monsters

For today's countdown idea, I am bringing back another oldie, but goodie.  Last year my kids had a blast making apple candy monsters.  This snack is even "semi-nutricious" if you can get your child to eat the apple after they are done.

We went through our stash of candy and picked up a few more items from the dollar store.

We cut the smiles with a paring knife.

The kids then went to town decorating their apples with the candy.

Can you tell who made which one?  Ha Ha. I think they were making apple versions of themselves at the time. I don't think Kara would fit the angel apple this year.

Some more of our handiwork.   This was such a fun activity for us.  Now is the perfect time to make apple candy monsters with your own kids,  since apples are now in season.

Countdown to Halloween-Owl Pumpkin

A new member was added to the Pumpkin Gang today.   Since owls are all the rage this year, I tried my hand a making an owl pumpkin. I think it turned out pretty cute.

I started with a dollar store pumpkin, and painted it brown.  I also had a bag of feathers, a pair of yellow eyeballs, scraps of orange and yellow felt, and some orange craft foam.

Before gluing on the face, I checked if I like the placement with a pieces of scotch tape.  Once I was happy, I whipped out the glue gun.   I made the outer part of the eyes out of felt, but craft foam could easily be used in its place.   Craft foam, poster board, or fabric could be used for the beak as well.

I tried the wings a couple of different ways before I was satisfied.

I was originally going to have them up to look like the owl was flying, but I thought it was too bat-like.

I didn't really like them this way either.

I glued some feathers onto brown craft foam feathers and placed the flat against the pumpkin. For the last touch, I added some craft foam feet

Mummy Eye Wreath

Last year while making my Mummy Pumpkin,  I used dollar store gauze and eyeballs.  When I was at the store recently I picked some more with the idea to make a mummy themed wreath.

The mummy wreath  is simple to make.  I used the dollar store straw wreath, but you can use any type of wreath form.   You can find white goggle eyes in the craft aisle.  I found the color eyes at JoAnn crafts for just a few cents more.

I used one roll of gauze and covered the form.

Use glue to attach sets of eyeballs around the wreath.  I made mine on the simple side, but you could use a lot more eyeballs if you would like.  

Peek-A-Boo, I see you!!

One the eyes were dry (I used Elmers, but hot glue would work too), I used a second roll of gauze and wrapped the wreath again.  I made sure to cover parts of the eyes, but made sure they peeked through.

I wasn't really sure to use for a bow.  None of my ribbons looked quite right.  I decided to use a third roll of gauze and made a messy bow that looked like it could have been from a mummy.    I did not dirty the guaze to give it an old look, but that could easily be done if desired.

Dare to Share #28

Wow do I have a lot to share this week.  I have a few more health updates.  Do you remember me sharing that I had an ultrasound of my thyroid  last week. Well on Tuesday around 6 p.m., I got a call directly from my Dr.  She said that she got the results back and I have 2 nodules bigger than 1 cm that need to be biopsied. She does not necessarily think it is anything serious but they are bigger than the benchmark.  She also referred me to the endocrinologist now that I have the nodules in addition to my hashimotos.  On Wednesday, I had my echo stress test.  First they take an ultrasound of your heart and then make you get on the treadmill.  Once you get your heart rate to a certain rate they rush you back to the bed for another ultrasound.   I think it went pretty well. I did okay on the treadmill.  Had I taken the stress test a couple of weeks ago pre-thyroid meds there is no way I could have lasted as long.  I will see the heart Dr again in about two weeks and will be called sooner if anything serious is found on my report.

 

Today's linky party is starting late tonight because my 15 year old asked me to take her to see Pitch Perfect today. I was kind of surprised because she is not really a fan of Glee or other music shows.  We ended up going to the late show and got home around midnight.  This is definitely more of a chick flick because of the ratio of guys to girls in the audience.  I counted only about 25 guys and I know there were more than 200 girls.  All of the guys came with either a girlfriend/wife.   This movie is so much fun!  Rebel Wilson who plays Fat Amy (in the picture) is hilarious and made the movie.  If you like music and like to laugh, you will really enjoy this movie.

I also made a mummy eye wreath using dollar store items.   I went kind of simple and not sure if it needs more eyes.   It was easy to make, and I like how it looks on the door.

Countdown to Halloween-Treats of the Day

Countdown to Halloween

If you are a long time follower of me the last few years on Weebly and Blogger, you know that starting Nov 1, I do a daily countdown to the holidays.  I would feature an ornament, treat or craft of the day to share ideas we could all use in our holiday planning.  This year I am going to extend on that, and also have a Countdown to Halloween every day in the month of October.  If you have something that you would like me to feature for Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas, please contact me.


I am going to start today's countdown with some inexpensive decorating ideas with light that we have done for Halloweens in the  past.

This is what our trick or treaters saw when we opened the door. The entire foyer and stairs were light up and glowing..  I had pumpkins plugged in on the stair landing and hallway.  The pumpkins on the stairs have glow sticks in them.  I wanted battery operated tea lights, but they Dollar Tree ran out before I could buy some.  I hope to get some for this year.

Have you seen this idea on Pinterest?  Someone shared about cut out holes in a TP tube and the placing a glow stick inside..

We tried it out, and it really does work..  Can you imagine several bushes with glowing eyes.  I picked up a tube of glow sticks that I plan to use for our row of bushes in front of the house.   I have been saving TP tubes for the last several weeks.

Another fun way I have decorated with light it is set up a pumpkin display in our front window.  I am not able to do it anymore because the bush and tree in front of it make it too hard to see.  I have so many plug in pumpkins because I get them on clearance in the days after Halloween for at least 50-75% off.

I am going to start breaking out this years decorations this week.  What will I do this year??
