Pokemon Party

If you have a Pokemon lover in your house like I do, you know that the new games Pokemon Black and Pokemon White were released on Sunday March 6. My son has not let me forget it. A few years ago When my son turned 8, he wanted to have a Pokemon Themed Birthday Party . At the time, there were no new games coming out, and there were no Pokemon party supplies available. I had to "make them all". We were talking last night, and he told me that his Pokemon party was his very favorite birthday party that he has had.

With the release of the new games, there will be a new wave of popularity. I can imagine there will be many requests for Pokemon parties. While Pokemon Party supplies are available now at party stores, I thought I would share our party ideas to throw that perfect Pokemon party.

How to make your own Pokemon Invitations

The first thing I needed to do was come up with an invitation. I decided to make Pokeballs. I cut two white circles, and a red circle that were the size of the invitation that I wanted to send. I used one circle still in one piece as the back part of the invite with all the party information. For the front I cut the red circle and the 2nd white circle in half. I put them together to look like a Pokeball. I used brads to attach them to the bottom circle. The half circle on the top of the invitation were able move so the recipient could read the invite. For a final touch, I attached a smaller white circle to the red half, but let it overlap on the white half to look like a real Pokeball.

Pokeball Invitations for a Pokemon Party

On the front of the invitation, I wrote each childs name and I choose you!
On the inside I wrote ...

Please come to my Pokemon party!
Date and Time
RSVP to Professor Mom at ### - ### - ####

On the day of the party I had a large Pokeball made out of poster board on the front door welcoming the Pokemon Trainers.

One tradition that I try to do at all my parties is take a picture of the kids with part of the theme. This is my son wearing his special Pokemon trainer hat holding his Pikachu . I decorated the fireplace with red, yellow and blue streamers, and Pokeball pinatas that I had made.

To make the Pokeball pinatas I covered round balloons with paper mache

When the paper was thick enough and dried, I painted each ball white.

Pokeball Pinata

I painted the top half red and added the black details. Because they were decorations and not the actual pinata, my son still has these a few years later.  If you want a Pokeball Pinata but don't want to make it yourself, I found one on Amazon here.

Pokemon Party Games

Once all of the children arrived, we played Pokemon Bingo. There is a great website where you can make customized bingo boards of all kinds That you can find here     The markers provenance red, blue and yellow squares That cut from cardstock.

Pokemon Party Games, Pin the Tail on Pikachu

We then played Pin the Tale on the Pikachu. I drew Pikachu on poster board and hung it on the garage. We also play this game at other parties, but with different themes. We have had pin the tail on the cat, pin the hat on Madeline, pin the cherry on the sundae and much more.

It was a gorgeous spring day the afternoon of the party. We went outside for a Pokemon Lesson. I had my son pick his 20 favorite Pokemon. I did a little research about those 20, and gave a mini lesson to the kids. The reason for the lesson was for the next game ... "Got to Find Them All."

Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of a finished Pokeball we used in the game, but I can explain how I made them. I painted clear plastic ball ornaments that I found at the craft store white and red. In each Pokeball, I placed a paper picture cut out of one of the 20 Pokemon that the kids learned about.

Pass the Pokemon Party Game

To find out which Pokemon each child would be assigned, we played "Pass the Pokeball." (Like pass the potato) Instead of being out when the music stopped, the child holding the Pokeball got to keep it. The Pokemon inside would be who they were going try to catch.

You can kind of see what one of the Pokeballs looks like in this picture .

Once everyone had three  Pokeballs, they had to search the entire yard to find the three pokemon (printed on small squares) that matched the Pokemon in their Pokeball. We had a few extra, so the kids helped find those Pokemon as well. .

Pokeball Cake for a Pokemon Party

After the games, it was time to eat. I decorated the table with a blue tablecloth and alternated red and yellow plates and napkins. I can not remember the food we ate that day, but I am sure I themed it out!
I made a Pokeball cake for my son. It was an easy cake to make. Just make a large circle cake using a large round cake pan,  and decorate with red and white frosting. The fine black line was writing gel.

As you can see in this picture, he LOVED his cake.

We opened gifts, and then it was time to go home.

For the take home goody bags, I had decorated colorful paper bags that said Pokemon Master with their names.
Some of the goodies that I can remember were  pencils from the  Oriental Trading Company  that said Pokemon Master on the side. I also bought  Pokemon Stickers, I found them on Ebay (hard to find at the time), but you might also find them on Amazon.. They also each kept their red and white trucker hat (that are worn on the show), and their plastic Pokeball that I had made.

It was a very memorable day that  he still remembers it fondly several  years later.

Pokemon party items can now be found everywhere.  Here are some items that I found that I feel would be a great addition a Pokemon party.

(Added  to post on 7/13/16)

I don't know why I did not think of adding my Pokeball Rice Krispie Treats that I made for my son a couple of years ago to this Pokemon Party before now, but better late than never.   When my son turned 15, I made him Video Game Birthday Treats

  4. That is SO awesome - and it's also kind of sad that I am partially jealous :) My husband and I both loved Pokemon when we were younger - and I'm not going to lie...we both have Pokemon games for our DS-es.
