The Unicorn Lovers Gift Guide

Meet Fluffy.  She is the inspiration for this post.  I adopted her earlier this month, when I found her on sale a few weeks before Thanksgiving.   If you follow me on Facebook, or Instagram, you probably already know I really like unicorns.  I frequently share unicorn themed recipes, and crafts, and I was recently even a unicorn for Halloween.

With the popularity of all things unicorn in the stores and on social media, I know I am not alone with my love of unicorns.   If you have someone in your life who also loves unicorn here are some of my favorite things I have found online, and would personally love under my own Christmas tree.

Watch Ya' Mouth Throwdown Game Review

game reviews, family games, party games

Disclosure: I am an US Family Guide Blogger.  I received this game to review for my readers.  All opinions are 100% mine.

This past week I received the game Watch Ya' Mouth Throwdown Edition to play with my family.  We knew the perfect time to try it out was over Thanksgiving when we would be eating dinner with friends.   I played the game with my friend who is a nurse, and three apprehensive, grumpy teenagers.

We had all seen the first version of the game on TV,  but none of us have played it before.  When I opened the game we found a lot of colorful game pieces.

We followed the directions, and washed the mouthpieces we had chosen to use.  My friend the nurse made sure we kept things sanitary.  She had just gotten over a cold, and joked that if we did not prepare the game properly, we would have to call it "How to Catch a Cold" game.  They are top rack dishwasher safe, which seems like a great way to clean them before and after playing.

I have a very small mouth.  As hard as I tried I could not get the mouthpiece in my mouth, that is when I realized that there were TWO sizes, large and small.  I had been trying to use the large adult size, but luckily the smaller child size fit.

I have to admit when you are wearing the mouthpieces you look pretty ridiculous. (though that that is part of the fun of it)  My daughter would not let me take a picture  of her wearing it, and my son hid behind the box.   My friend's son was  brave and allowed me to use him as the model in my photos.

In the game you go around the table, and roll a die with arrows on it.  Depending on how it lands, it will show you who you are challenging   You the pick up a Throwdown card, and follow the directions it tells you to do.  The instructions say you can not pass on a Throwdown.  Some of the challenges are very difficult, so I made the executive decision to allow passing, so my players would stay in the game.

We noticed that this game is for ages 8 and up.  Some of the cards may be too hard for younger players. On one of the cards you had to sing a song with the mouthpiece in.  The teens we played with were ages 16, 17 and 18, and not one of them knew who Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and Neil Diamond on the were.  I even sang the songs associated with them without the guard, still clueless. They did redeem themselves with knowing PRINCE, and Elvis Presley though.. (I'm a 80's kid, who loves Prince)

You use different props (and add some of your own)  Here Noah shows demonstrates one of the games with the straw.

If you find the challenges are too hard, you can still  play the original version by using the phrases deck.

If you are not a fan of looking silly, and trying new things this may not be the game for you.  However, if you were a fan of the first game, you will probably love this one too.   It is a great game for parties and large groups.

Quick and Easy Pepperoni Pizza Spaghetti Squash

I love this time of year when you can often find squash on sale at the grocery store.  One of our favorites to eat is spaghetti squash. I recently wanted to try something new when making squash for my family.  I had spaghetti sauce, pepperoni, and a few kinds of cheese on hand, so I I decided to try my own version of Pepperoni Pizza Spaghetti Squash.

I don't know about you, but I think the worse part of making squash is cutting it. It always takes a lot of effort.  In the end though, once it is finally done, I am glad that powered through it.  When the squash was cut in half lengthwise, I cleaned out the seeds.

There are a couple of different ways you can bake squash. You can cook it in the oven, but I find it works just as well in the microwave.  When I cook it in the microwave, I only do one half at a time.  First I rubbed  a little bit of butter on the squash, and turned it face down in a microwave safe pan. I then set the microwave for 8 minutes.  It's okay it if sits a minute or two when done, because it will be very HOT.

Using two forks, I shred the squash until it looked like spaghetti.  I then added the other ingredients.  I don't have exact measurements of what I used, I just added what looked good to me.  I sprinkled in a decent amount of Parmesan cheese, and some garlic salt.  I then mixed it all together, and added a little bit more Parm.

On top of the squash and cheese mixture, I poured a layer of spaghetti sauce.  The cheese on top can be any type of cheese you prefer.  On the day I made this, I used cheddar, because it is one of our favorite cheeses, and what I had in the refrigerator.

Before putting it back in the microwave, I added slices of pepperoni on top.  I then put the squash back in for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes to heat up the sauce and melt the cheese.  When it was done, I sprinkled a little bit more Parmesan. (We love our cheese!)

This was a pretty big squash so it was big enough to feed 2 to 3 people.  It was a tasty meal, and one we will eat again!

It is Friday night, and you know what that means..
It is time to Dare to Share!!

I have been blogging for several years, and for the past few months or so, I took a bit of a break.  I had gotten to the point where I was just not feeling very creative, and I need a break to recharge. It seems to have worked.  I am excited to post again, and have several posts and parties in the works.   Earlier this week, I shared about the Lapis Lazuli Cosplay from Steven Universe I helped my daughter to create.  It was a lot of fun, and she looked really cute blue.

I shared about an upcoming review  I am going to be doing on the game Watch Ya' Mouth Throwdown, and gave a coupon code for 15% off

Yesterday, I made a new recipe for dinner, and I am in the process of posting it.  It was really good, and I will be making it again.  Today I got some really fun items mail.  I received supplies for two upcoming parties, a gingerbread house making party, and a Woodland themed Christmas Party. I will be sharing some of these items on Instagram  and Facebook this weekend.

How to make a Lapis Lazuli Cosplay (at the last minute)

DIY Cosplay, Steven Universe, Lapis Lazuli

Recently we had a big anime convention in our area.  My daughter and her friends decided to dress up as several of the characters from the show Steven Universe. She chose to go  as Lapis Lazuli.  She waited a bit to long before she ordered her outfit, which was the blue dress that Lapis normally wears. She found out late evening two days before the convention that there was some miscommunication on her part, and that her dress was not going to arrive in time.   She had to come up with Plan B, and put something together quickly.  Luckily her character also wears a baseball outfit on the show.  The day before the convention we went shopping, and found all of the pieces that we would need to make a Lapis Lazuli costume at the last minute.

Disclosure: Links in this post are affiliate links.  If you decide to purchase something it does not affect your cost, but I will get a small commission from Amazon.

We were able to find many of the items at local stores in the area.  The shorts, white tennis shoes, and white hat were at Walmart.  If you are not able to find any, here are links to the shoes, and hat on Amazon.

We had trouble finding a white baseball shirt with blue sleeves, so we made one.  We bought our white tee from the dollar store, and blue fabric paint.  We found the paint at Michaels and used a coupon, but if you don't have one nearby, I linked the one we used.  She painted the tee shirt sleeves, the hat rim, the shoes, and the socks. (more on the socks in a minute)

While her paint job on the shoes was not perfect, you could not tell when they were on her feet.

You may notice in her picture above that her face and body are light blue.  For her face she used Snazaroo  in turquoise.  Instead of using the body paint on her arms and legs too,  she went with another option   We bought two pairs of white tights from Target, and a bottle of Rit Dye in Teal.  She dyed both pairs of tights, using the directions on the package.  She wore one of the tights on her legs, and made the other pair for her arms into gloves. (pictured above) They look kind of weird here, but they did look nice once her fingers were in them.  The stitches would have looked prettier if she used a sewing machine, but instead she stitched them by hand.   First she  traced her hands onto paper, and made a cardboard pattern. She made sure to leave a little bit of space between each finger to allow for the stitching once the pattern was in place.  She then turned the tights inside out, and cut the very end of the toes with fabric scissors. She placed the cardboard pattern inside the tights, and began sewing around it. When finished, she carefully removed the cardboard. Once she had a fit she liked, she trimmed the excess fabric between the fingers, and turned the tights right side out.  We had also  picked up a pack of fake fingernails at the dollar store.  She painted them with dark blue nail polish and when dry, hot glued them onto each of the glove fingers. She attached them while she was wearing the gloves to get them in the correct location.

Now about the knee socks that were supposed to be part of the costume.  Since we still had her batch of Rit dye made up, she dyed the socks blue.  The socks of the costume are supposed to be  a darker blue than the skin color, but even with coloring them twice, they were not dark enough. It was too late to go out and buy another bottle of dye in a darker color, so she thought she would  use fabric paint and paint them.  In theory that was a good idea, in reality, it did not work out so well because the paint did not dry in time.  The socks were still too damp to wear as they were leaving for the convention.  We were very happy with how well her cosplay turned out, and even buying everything last minute it did not cost a lot to make.

Once there, she had a great time!

I still have not see the pictures with all of the gems, but I did love these two pics from the convention.

While I was looking for the items we used, I found a few more things that any Steven Universe fan would live to have.

There are many more items from the show available on Amazon.   I see several things that I think I might get my own daughter this Christmas.

Dare to Share #286

It is Friday night, and you know what that means..
It is time to Dare to Share!

Can you believe the holidays are right around the corner?!  I have been blogging for many years, and you probably noticed the last few months that I took a bit of a break. When you do something for a long time, sometimes you just need some time to off to get your creative juices going again.  I am now ready to come back with lots of new ideas, new parties, new recipes, and new tips.

Tonight my daughter is in the middle of a project that we are going to share on the blog. If you have teenagers, like Steven Universe, and/or cosplay, you will be interested in  this upcoming post.  Today we bought the supplies to make costume that will be part of a group of characters.  I love how it is all coming together, and how inexpensive we were able to find the supplies.    In addition to more costume ideas, I have to upcoming Christmas party posts, several new Christmas crafts, and much more...

Now though, it is time for this week's party..
