Our Visit to the Michigan Renaissance Festival

Disclosure:  I was given tickets to visit the Michigan Renaissance Festival  and give an honest review. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted about the special deal on tickets for the 37th Annual Michigan Renaissance Festival? (the deal is still good for a few more weeks!)  This past weekend we finally had the chance to go.  Each weekend there is a different theme.  My son really wanted to go to one of the Highland Fling Weekends. This weekend was Shamrocks and Shenanigans, an Irish version of the Highland Heavy Games. Irish Dancers performed  in addition to a lot of other Celtic entertainment.
There were five of us who went. Two grown ups, two teenage boys and preteen girl. One of the teenage boys and the girl had gone before, but the rest of us had no idea what to expect. Parking (which is FREE) is in a field, and then you walk down a  long path through the woods to the front gate.  Right away we noticed a lot of people were dressesd in all kinds of costumes. A lot of the costumes were traditional Renaissance outfits, but there were also a lot of other very creative people out there.  We saw some unicorns, fairies, and even a Pikachu. You could pretty much wear just about anything and you would blend in.  I was dressed as a mom in jeans and a sweatshirt.. :)

As we walked into festival, we saw Crannog, a band that played traditional Irish, Scottish and Medieval music.  There were many little shops all around, with all kinds of things to look at.  Almost immediately one of the teenage boys disappeared into a shop. He had been there before, and had an idea of what he was looking for.  Since the other two kids were not really into browsing, we decided to see what else we could find.

Right away we saw the petting zoo. Being animal lovers, the preteen girl and I had to go in and see them. This one was her favorite. It was a very sweet, and good natured. There were also some baby goats, a few lamb, a llama and a calf.  There were brushes available if you wanted to brush the animals, which she did.

We were hoping to take a peek in the castle, but there was a wedding going on so it was closed to the public. We thought we might come back  later on, but we got busy doing other things and forgot.

On a nearby stage we stumbled upon the Ric Roc Zoo and his "dumb show".  His show is true to it's name. It was pretty dumb, but it was also funny. He brought up volunteers from the audience for parts of the show, and they were really funny too.  He did some impressive juggling and balancing tricks that we all enjoyed. When his show was over he announced that his next show was "the stupid show" with different tricks.

While walking through another part of the village, we stumbled across this familiar face.  He was happy to pose for pictures with the guests.

We caught the tail end of the Manolete Pyro Gyro Show. We were definitely entertained by the part we did see.

We then went to the joust field, because it was time to see the joust. This was definitely the favorite part of the festival for all three of the males in our group.  It was a lot of fun to watch for us females as well. The two knights on the left were the good guys, the ones on the right not so much.

There were three rounds in the joust.  The winner of the first round, and the winner of the second round went head to head in the third round. The losers of the joust were not very happy with the outcome, and challenged the winners to a rematch.  A match that would be to the death!  We were told to come back a few hours later to see the "final" joust, and to find out which knight would actually survive.

There was a little over an hour before the final joust, so we went to see a few more attractions. Us girls wanted to see the live mermaid at Mermaid Lagoon. The guys decided they would go watch some of the Highland Heavy Game events while we waited in line. There was a little bit of wait to meet the  mermaid, but we enjoyed looking at all the themed murals submitted by festival guests that lined the path.   The mermaid was very nice and chatted with each of the children in her special language.  She also gave each of them a special pebble from the bottom of her tank. We were told when we left that there would be other mermaids to visit if we wanted to come back.

There was still a little more time after visiting the mermaid, so next we went to the fairy house garden. When the festival first started in August, guests were encouraged to submit a fairy house for a contest. The houses were all so different from each other, but very creative. This was one of our favorites, a treehouse for Tinkerbell.

For the final joust we sat in a different area with a better view of the action. The Queen was present for this event. She tried to talk some sense into the knights, as there must be a better way to fight for their honor instead of fighting to the death. As expected, the knights disagreed.

I don't want to give away how the joust ended, just know that it was action packed.  There was fighting on horseback and on the ground.  There was a final winner, and all of the knights do come back to life, so that they may fight again each weekend.

I did not get any pictures of the food, but there is a lot of choices to choose from.  There is everything from giant turkey legs, to burgers, soup, and ice cream. There are even pickle vendors selling giant pickles. For adults who like alcoholic beverages, there are also several places were you can try out your favorite beers and wine.

If you would like to go to the Michigan Renaissance Festival an experience it for yourself there is still time.  It runs through Oct 4th  This upcoming weekend is the Harvest Huzzah which has a BBQ competition and festival.  On Sunday the 27th, there will be Pie Wars for those who love pie.  On Friday Oct 2nd, there is a special Festival Friday with an after hours Masquerade Ball, and free admission for military.  If you have a sweet tooth, you may consider going to Sweet Endings,  That weekend there will be a chocolate festival with free samples, a cupcake crusade, and fencing competition.  More information about each of the weekends, times and directions and can be found on the festival website HERE.

We all very much enjoyed our day at the festival.  If you go, we think you will too.

Back to School and Everything Else

It is back to school time where we live.  We are in a state where school actually starts after Labor Day, and  I really like it that way. This year the start of school was bittersweet.  In years past I would have three happy, smiling kids to get ready for school. We would take a lot of fun pictures in the daylight before catching the bus.   This year there were only two, as my oldest graduated this past June. My youngest is starting high school, and the freshman were the only ones to go in on the first morning which meant pictures by herself.  The high school starts pretty early, so it is often still dark when we leave for school. My kids also do not ride the bus this year.   My daughter was feeling nervous and tired, so she was not really into taking pictures in the dark. I can't say I blame her. I was nervous for her.

A few hours later it was my son's turn to go. He also was not that happy to have his picture taken.  It was late enough for there to be daylight, but I just could not get him to smile.  I have a couple of pictures of him looking like this, before he decided he was done.  I am used to it though, almost every single year he has made a least one grumpy face. He has so many of them, I was able to make a collage.  LOL!

I was hoping that after school I would be able to get some pictures of the two of them together. Luckily they were a little more cooperative then.  They were both tired and hungry, but they stopped long enough for a photo where they were both smiling.  We even had a bonus fur baby getting in on the act.  While I may not have many first day photos this year, we have made it successfully through the first week, and that is what counts.

This week is when the real craziness begins.. The calm of summer is definitely over.  We went from zero to 60 overnight.  This week both dance and robotics begin.  Kara is starting her 13th year of dance, and Kyle his 3rd year of Robotics.  We also have an Orthodontist appointment  (they will decide if they are coming off tomorrow!)  There will also be the yearly open house at the high school where you can walk your child's schedule and meet the teachers. It is hard for parents like me where you have two students, and you have to pick and choose which class to go to.   I also have a kick off dinner for my womens' group that I attend during the school year.  I am looking forward to that night, because is always a good night with friends.

Did you just go back to school too?  Are you back to your busy back to school schedule?

Dare to Share #180

It is Friday night, and you know what that means..
It is time to Dare to Share!

My kids went back to school this week. I will be writing more about our week in a post this weekend.  It has been bittersweet start to this year. This is the first year my oldest is not going to school. She graduated this past June, and is taking a break before starting college classes.   My youngest started high school.  There will be some adjusting to a new school, new schedule, and new opportunities.

If you live in Michigan you might want to check out the Zap Zone. I shared about what you can expect at one this week, and a discount if you plan on going which you can find here.

I know I mentioned that we would be going to the Michigan Renaissance Festival  a week or so ago. We did not end up going just yet.  The day we had planned on going my daughter had a migraine, a friend who was going with us had to work, and my son just did not feel like getting up at a decent time.  Luckily it runs until Oct 4th, so we still have a few more weekends to go!

Earlier today I shared five very different features; 20 Visual Printable Schedules, Easy Candy Corn Costume Tutorial, How to Host a Caramel Apple Bar, Disney Descendants Doll Accessory Storage, and Funnel Cake Fries with S'Mores Dip. You can see a lot more about each of the features and bloggers HERE,

My co-host Kim from Kandy Kreations did not have a new post this week, but she feature five more bloggers  with great self help posts.  Stop over to her blog here, to see if you were featured.

Now it is time for this weeks's party. You are welcome to link up anything you would like to share. If you are chosen as a Dare to Share Feature of the Day your post will be featured on the blog and my social media.  This party is also seen on Kandy Kreations for double the exposure.  Kim also chooses features for her blog and social media.

Dare to Share FEATURES of the Day

This week I am changing things up again. Between Labor Day, the start  of school. a substitute teacher meeting (I am going to be a sub!) and very, very slow internet service this week, I have not had a lot of time to post. While going through the Dare to Share  party, I saw so many awesome ideas.  I chose five (one for each weekday) of the things that I loved, and are very timely to what is going on right now.

With the start of school, many families find themselves trying to adjust to getting back on schedule. This is especially true when you have a  child on the spectrum like me and Lisa of A Day in Our Shoes. She shared 20 visual printable schedules that may help  to get this school year on the right track.

I don't know about you, but I am still having a tough time adjusting that it is September, let alone that  Halloween is NEXT MONTH!  For the last several years I had made homemade Halloween costumes for my kids, while they are a bit on the older side now, I do have a special nine year old in my life that hope  I can make one for this year. I think this Easy Candy Corn Costume by The Mom Creative  is adorable, and simple enough for everyone to make.  The smiling baby in the is super cute too!

Apple season is here!  I love to go apple picking every year.  A fun thing you can do with all those apples is Host a Caramel Apple Bar like Momma DJane. Everything looks so yummy, and it is sure to be something that you friends enjoy.

I love the Disney channel.  Confession time, I even watch Disney channel without my kids. This past summer the Descendants movie was a huge hit.  They are spinning off an animated show this fall, and will be making Descendants 2 in the near future. If you have kids who are fans, they may have some of the dolls and accessories.  Views from the Ville shared this fun craft to make Descendant themed storage for your kids toys.

This treat looks amazing to me. Not only are the fries made from funnel cake, but they are dipped in S'Mores dip That sounds heavenly to me. You can see how the full recipe on how to make your own on Bombshell Bling

Dare to Share #179

It is Friday night and you know what that means..
It is time to Dare to Share!

This is our last Friday of summer vacation. It is hard to believe that summer is over.  With everything going on, I did not get to do as much as I would have liked. I do look forward to all the fun events of fall, just not the cool temps.  Here in Michigan cooler temps mean winter is around the corner..

I feature A Magical Woodland Fairy Party The Mom Creative from Dare to Share. I would have loved to have been a guest at this party.

Today in a flashback post, I shared some of my favorite apple themed party ideas now that September has officially begun.

Are you into the new adult coloring book craze?  My co-host Kim from Kandy Kreations has some free coloring book page printables this week that  you will want to check out.

Flashback Friday Party Post and More

While I am spending these last few days before school starts with my kids and getting them ready for school,  I am also beginning to think of fall and all of the fun posts that come with it. I have a long list of things I want to make and do.  As you know this summer was a hard one for me.  While I am sad to see summer end, the start of school will bring a new start, a new routine, and some new adventures. I am planning on writing on my second blog Surviving the Crazy Life again. My last post was way back in March when Kara was dealing with her migraines.  I did not mean to stop writing on it, it's just my life got TOO CRAZY :O  Yes, that is a shocked face.

So while I am busy taking care of some other things today, I thought I would re-share some of my favorite apple party posts from a few years. Hard to believe it is apple picking time already!

I am looking forward to some new apple posts in the upcoming weeks!

Magical Woodland Fairy Party - Feature of the Day

Woodland Party, Fairy Party, Woodland Mushrooms

We have always loved all things Woodland, and even had our own Woodland Party three years ago, which made me immediately notice this Magical Woodland Fairy Party by The Mom Creative. There are just so many things to love about this party!  She made a lot of of the decorations herself at very little cost.  I LOVE the handmade mushroom garden, and want to make my own now. She re-purposed clearance items from different holidays to use at the party. The party goers look so happy and adorable with their fairy costumes from the dollar store.  Having a beautiful party does not have to cost a lot, and I am sure this one will be one that her daughter is always going to remember.   Be sure to stop over to The Mom Creative to get all the party details and ideas.    Thank you so much Jessica for linking up your party post to Dare to Share!
