How to Make Despicable Me Minions

DIY Minions, cardboard tube crafts

This month I am starting something  new here on Pam's Party and Practical Tips.  Each week I will be featuring a different party of the week. Each day I will give you a tutorial or some ideas of things you can do for that week's party.  As you can see by my title picture, this week's theme is...

Despicable Me

This summer we went to see the movie. We loved it! We especially loved the antics of the Minions. I shared them in a guest post earlier in the summer, but I don't know if my readers had a chance to see them.  Since it has been over a month, I am now able to share them here.. I am so excited about it, because I really love these little guys.

Despicable Me Minions

Aren't they cute?!  For this craft you will need toilet paper tubes, craft paint, felt, craft foam, black ribbon, (good minions), fuzzy purple yarn (evil minions). and google eyes.

The first thing you do is paint the tubes in your desired colors. I think if I make these again, I would chose a slightly lighter purple.

I just realized that I forgot to add styrofoam balls to the list.  I found these at the dollar store. You will want to use the size that will fit through the tube. Wrap the ball with a piece of felt or fleece that closely matches the yellow minions paint color. It doesn't matter what color you use on the evil minions because it will be covered in yarn.

Push the ball through the tube until about half of the ball is showing on the other end.

I then started to add some of the details. For Dave I glued on two eye, small pieces of ribbon for the hair, and some blue felt for his overalls.   When making Stuart use only one eye in the middle of his face.

Here is a better picture of the hair.  I used a hot glue gun and glued on the yarn to the evil minions. It does not have perfect, because they hair is will and messed up anyway.

To make the overalls, add a smaller square of felt for the bib and a thin strips of felt for the straps. You make the evil minions overalls this way to put with black felt.

Now all that is left is the final details. I used small pieces of craft foam to make the goggles. Since I did not have silver foam, I painted them with silver paint. I  also used a small strip of the blace felt to make the goggle band, and drew a smile with a black sharpie.  To make their arms/hands I used yellow craft foam  for the arms, and black craft foam hands.

I made the goggles and the arms/hands for the evil minions the same way as I did the good minions.  The only thing different is the jagged teeth. I cut small pieces of craft foam for the teeth. Again it does not really need to be perfect since they are supposed to be crazy looking.

There are many things you can do with your minions.  They love to play, and they made great finger puppets. They would also be good to decorate the dessert table at a Despicable Me party.  Whatever you decided to do with them, it sure to be fun.

    1. They were easy to make. Probably the hardest part for me was the evil Minions hair. I used a glue gun, and I tend to burn myself when using it. LOL!
