Our Woodland Party
She invited 7 friends, and 6 of them were able to attend. Her older sister had a few friends stop by as well. Decorating for the party was a lot of fun. Earlier in the week, she made her moss letters and we added them to the dessert table.
This was not my original plan for the decor. I originally hung 2 of the red paper lanterns and the 2 owl lanterns over the table. I also designed a cardboard tree that I was going to use as a part of the backdrop. Things did not go as planned though. I messed up when measuring the tree. I needed it to be about 6 feet tall, but when I brought it in the house I realized it was 2-3 feet too tall. I forgot to compensate for the length of the branches. There was also not a good way to attach the tree and get it to stand up, so we had to come up with plan B. The tape on the lanterns would not stick to the ceiling, and when one fell for the third time, I decided not to rehang them. I also had trouble with the green panel on the right. For whatever reason it did not want to stay put and fell to the ground several times. While I love the fabric I bought from IKEA, it was kind of slippery to work with. I used a real branch from a tree that had been removed a few weeks ago instead. Even though this set up was plan B, I really liked it.
Each of the girls posed with their favorite woodland animal by the cardboard tree. It was so big that it fell twice before we took the pictures, but it got the job done.
It was then time for food. I was a little bummed about the cupcakes. I had planned on piping on the quills to each of the cupcakes. In the end I was so pressed for time, and could not find my piping bags, so I just used two colors of frosting and some mini chips for the face. The kids loved them just the same as they would had I spent a lot more time adding quills on them. Either way they were delicious!
On the main table, I had another hedgehog watermelon. I am glad that I had made a practice version, because I had to whip this one out just a few minutes before the party.
In the big bowl was Survive in the Woods Trail Mix (recipe will be posted soon) and chocolate dipped strawberries.
There were little cups of pond jello, that were a big hit.
The kids also loved the smores pops and chocolate acorns.
Not pictured, we also had orange fruit cups, and pinwheel pizza snails. I had made some cheese/tomato mushrooms, that were forgotten in the fridge.. Ooops!. In the pitchers on the kitchen table, were ice water and orange sherbet punch. While the girls were outside, they also had access to Capri Sun.
Blowing out the candles.. It is hard to put 11 candles on a cupcake, so she chose to use only 2.
In order to save on the number of paper cups used, I gave each of the guests their own jar marked with their name for drinking glasses. It fit in nicely with theme, and not once was there a mix up on whose cup belonged to who.
There were a few added touches around the house, that helped with the theme. I made the mushroom just by using a green planter and a dollar store moss form upside down.
When it was time to go, each guest got to take an owl goody bag from the owls nest.
Overall the party was a success, and Kara and her friends had fun. That is what really counts!!! I was a bit bummed when after the party I realized I forgot to take a group shot of the girls. I did get pictures of each of them on their own, so at least I have that. Another year, and we survived another party.
Beach Party-Crabby Sandwich recipe
I based our crabby sandwiches on the one I found in Family Fun. While the one in the magazine looks picture perfect, this is a real life made in a hurry because the party is about to start version.. LOL!
I found the crossiants at Meijer the day before the party. They were the perfect size for the sandwiches. They were not as long and softer than the magazine version, but still worked out well. I sliced the crossiants about 2/3 of the way through and filled with homemade chicken salad. (sorry no pic of this step)
The claws are not the prettiest because I was in a hurry to get everything done before the party. Use a red pepper and cut triangles into claw shapes. In the Famliy Fun version it said to snip the ends of the crossiant and slid the claw in. This did not work for me, so I used toothpicks instead.
To make the eyes, roll cream cheese into ball shapes and insert a toothpick. This did make nice eyes but it is bit soft it does slip a bit.
Add black olive slices on to the cream cheese eyes and baby carrot sticks into the back for legs.
In the magazine they used a radish slice for a mouth. I did not buy a radish and was realisic enough to know that very few kids would even touch one. I decided to leave the mouth off, and they were still very cute and perfect for our beach party.
Beach Bash Birthday
Be prepared for a long, picture heavy post ahead! Well it was finally the day of the beach bash birthday for my now 10 yr old daughter.. (waah! she is my last one, now all are in double digits!!) We started the party by posing with the surfboards and beach balls in the family room.
I thought I got a picture of the girls crafting, but realized when I downloaded my pics, that I had not. They sat on the large beach blanket (a vinyl tablecloth) to make their craft. When they were working on their flip flops, I was working on some last minute details. I bought each of the girls flip flops from the dollar store and some really fun summer fabric at JoAnn fabrics.
Here is one of the finished pairs, that one of the girls immediately starting wearing in the yard. She left them there during the water fight.
We played pin the tail on the flamingo. The flamingo was made out of neon poster board.
We had some games planned for outside, but it was literally a zillion degrees out. (in the mid 90s!) and it was just too hot to do much. We did not put up the volleyball/badmiton net because of heat. We did have a mini obstacle course, but made sure to include the sprinklers. I had the girls put on goggles and an intertube (it was too hot for the swim wings) and then go to only a couple of stations.
They threw hula hoops over the hula girl (all bought at the dollar store)
They fed tiki man small plastic balls.. Since it was so hot (and windy!) tiki man just ended up being propped up because the board kept blowing in the wind.
We threw beach balls in the crab, but ended up chasing them in neighbors yard most of the time, so then the girls just ..
had fun running in the sprinklers and shooting water from the water tubes.
We also played a few games with water balloons, which was a lot of fun. They then had a water balloon fight with the rest of the balloons.
Young girls can make a pet or a baby out of almost anything. During the water ballon fight, Kara decided she wanted to keep one of her balloon "babies". She named him Bob. A little while later she asked for a band aid. I thought someone might have been hurt. Turns out the band aid was for Bob, he had sprung a leak.
I was able to finally find some frisbees the day before the party at Michaels. We used these under the plates on the table.
Chicken salad crabs, hot dogs and chips were on the menu for lunch.
I also served a super fun watermelon shark that I saw on Sun Scholars . Mine was more cute than scary, because I did not get the angle of the mouth sharp enough, but the kids loved it anyway.
Since it was the 4th of July weekend, we also served 4th of July fruit "sparklers".
There was a dessert table, decorated with large paper lanterns that I found on clearance at Target.
We had swim/surf marshmellow pops, beach mix, beach cupcakes and candy.
I am a little bummed that I did not have one of the details for the cupcakes. A few weeks ago Kara was playing with the paper umbrellas. I told her they were for the party and then put them in a safe place. I can not remember where the safe place is! When I realized I could not find them, I asked Kara's dad to buy some more. The dollar store had sold out of them! He checked another store as well, but they did not have them either. While the umbrellas would have been cute, the cupcakes still made my daughter smile.
I had the girls pose with their beach bag goody bags before going home.
Garden Party
The party we had been planning for Operation Birthday had finally arrived. We went with a Garden Party/Spring Chick theme. The idea behind the chicks was that this was a milestone birthday, and my friend is STILL a spring chick. It was much more uplifting than an Over the Hill type of theme.
We decorated the night before the party. The green table cover needed some extra color so I used paper streamers to make an accent. You can see how I made it here. I placed my two topiaries on each end of the table. You can how to make them here I had planned on painting flowers on a vase I got at the thrift store but ran out of time. It was a pretty pink color which matched the colors, so I still used it in the center of the table.
We added the flower pot favors , filled with spring colored jellybeans.
I used the idea I saw by A Glimpse Inside to make flower garland.
We hung paper lanterns and some more flowers over the bar where the food was located.
The menu was light
Homemade Chicken Salad
Pasta Salad
Tortillas with fruit salsa
and Spring Chick cupcakes
To remember who attended this special birthday we made a singing frame.
We included her inviation (the girls) and embellished the with flowers and colorful "chick" letters.
During the party, all of the guests signed the matting and now R has a memento that she can hang up.
Somehow I missed taking a picture of the Spa station. We had two rocking chairs and a rolling cart. On the rolling cart we had a parafin bath where guests could dip their hands in was. We also had a foot massager where guests could enjoy relaxing their feet. The spa station was a HUGE hit with the guests.
This was the perfect party for a great friend.. Happy Birthday R!!
Dinosaur Party
Its been a few weeks since I have dug into my old photos and party archives to share one of our favorite parties. There was a time a few too many years ago when my son was really into dinosaurs. This photo reminds me how fast time really does fly because that cute little boy in the picture is now bigger than me. He really wanted dinosaurs at the party, but as we all know real dinosaurs do not exist. The only way my son could have dinosaurs at the party is if I made them. I cut out a triceratops and a giant T-rex out of large cardboard. The triceratops greeted the kids at the front door.
In the family room they were greeted with a T-Rex that was over 5 feet tall. Kara was about 3 at the time is posing in this picture to show his height. I used orange, green and yellow as the color scheme and hung the streamers vertically.
Each child received a "party hat" that was made out of craft foam. I made T-rex, a brontosaurus, and a triceratops in different colors.
I found large pieces of tan paper and taped them to the back of my counter. I then had all the kids draw pictures of their favorite dinosaurs and sign their names.
My son's birthday is at the end of April and normally we have good enough weather to go outside. This year it was cold and very rainy. I had a back up plan though and made a makeshift dinosaur dig in the garage. I found dinosaur skeletons and buried them in the sand. The children then pretended to be palentologists and searched for bones. When they found a skeleton they took it to s cleaning station and used paint brushes to clean off the sand.
Another game we played was search for the dinosaur eggs. Each child was given a pair binoculars made from cardboard tubes to help them in their search.
Here one of the guests excitedly shows off his eggs. To make them look like dino eggs I drew dots on plastic Easter eggs.
I am not sure where I found this dinosaur game, but we then played ring the dinosaur.
As a fun centerpiece I made dinosaurs out of an avacado and an eggplant. I used a carrot and half of green pepper for the tree.
The cake was an erupting volcano with plastic dinosaurs. I do remember having trouble with this cake. The red lava was supposed to harden but it didnt. One tip to remember, 5 yr old boys do not care about little details so it was not a problem. I do not have pictures of the food we ate that day, but I see cut up veggies in the background. I think those were 'bronto food'. We probably also had some kind of meat for the carnivorous dinos in the group.

I just thought this picture was funny!

Horse/Western Party
A few years ago my daughter was really into horses. She had a ton of My Little Ponies as many little girls do. About six months before her birthday, I was so excited to find the Fur Real pony on sale for 50% off after Christmas. Luckily we were at grandmas house at the time, and she was willing to keep it hidden at her house until Kara's summer birthday. Knowing that she was going to get the pony for her birthday, I talked her into a horse/western themed party. I scheduled her party for 2 weeks after her actual birthday, because we were going to be on vacation in Branson, Mo for the big day. She was shocked and thrilled to come back to the cabin one day and find Butterscotch waiting for her.
When everyone arrived for the party, we gave out cowgirl/cowboy hats, bandanas and sherrif badges. Each child then had the chance to pose with Butterscotch the pony. I had made a cardboard corral out of a large piece of cardboard, but we had to keep the pony and corral inside due to high winds and the threat of rain.
I dont have many pictures of the decorations. I wish I did, but at the time of this party I had no idea I was going to have a pary idea blog. =) I know I found checkered tablecloths at the dollar store that I used on the main table and in the craft area. I also used streamers, balloons and horse banners as decor.
We played several horse/western themed games. In this picture my older daughter is showing how to run the pony race. We had two horse sticks, and used them to run relay races. The girls loved trotting around the yard, and it was a good way to get some energy out.
In this picture we are panning for gold in the sandbox. I found a couple bags of fake gold coins, and hid them in the sand. Each child took turns panning for gold, and then they were able to keep their coins. While we did not have a Trading Post at my daugthers party, I really like the idea from Special Interest Day where the kids exchanged the gold they found for treats. This would be a good activity for this type of party because the kids would enjoy choosing their own prizes.
We also played a game called lasso the pony. I made a pony head out of foam board and paint.
To make the lasso, I wrapped a dollar store hula hoop with rope. Once they got the lasso moving they tried to catch the wild pony.
YeeHaw! Look at that lasso go.

I do not have any pictures of the craft we made that day, but I know we made one even though I can not remember it. A great craft for a horse/western party is for kids to design their own paper bag vest. Crayola has a tutorial on their website here

Oriental Trading has this really fun paper plate horse craft kit.
Other craft ideas could be to decorate horseshoes, pony coloring sheets or paper bag puppets.
I made her cowgirl boot cake by cutting a sheet cake using a template I drew myself. I know the M & Ms and candles have an interesting look to them, but that is what happens when you allow a 6 yr old to decorate her own cake.
I also do not have pictures of the other food we ate, but I know we served bbq meatballs, mini pizzas, chips, and baby carrots. We also had pony punch (hawaiian punch)
Smores would be another great option for this type of party.
After opening presents the kids took home goody bags filled with horse stickers, horse themed candy, horse finger puppets, and their gold coins. They also kept their cowgirl/cowboy hats, bandanas and sherrif badges.
Kara still has her Butterscotch pony and loves it to this day!
Safari Party

Another one of our favorite parties was the Safari Party I had for my son a few years back. One reason why it was a favorite for my daugther was we got to bring out the giant monkey.. LOL!! I bought that monkey through Oriental Trading Co or a local party store for about $15. I have used it for our as mascot for a luau, monkey party and or course this safari party. Each child posed in a Safari hat I bought from Oriental Trading with the giant monkey.

When the children first arrived, I had the present table set up with safari animals and the house decorated with vines. (both bought from the craft store and homemade)

I decorated the bathroom with jungle flowers, vines and green towels.

The kitchen light had a vine from the craft store that I bought on sale

I also made vines from rolling craft paper and squeezing it in shape. I added green yarn and craft form leaves. This particular vine has an added monkey that I bought from Oriental Trading. The kids each took home a safari animal at the end of the party.

As a reminder of who came that day, I had all the kids sign up to go on a Safari. I made the sign up sheet from a 12 x 12 sheet of cardstock so I could put it right in his scrapbook. I also had pictures of safari animals that I took at the zoo to show what kind of animals that might see on our pretend safari.

I bought a bucket of craft foam safari animals from Michaels. Each child made their own animal stick. I see that they are holding cardboard tubes in the picture. I can not remember what we were going to do with those. I know we made binoculars for our dinosaur party, which would have been good for this party too. I think I ran out of time and we just used them as looking glasses.

We played pin the tail on the lion. I looks like we had a lot of peekers at this party too. I made the lion from yellow poster board and brown cardstock.

I set up a safari themed obstacle course. In this picture Kyle is taking the baby elephant to its momma while carrying a marshmellow peanut on his spoon.

Kara is jumping over the snakes here.

This was the end of the obstacle course. This was momma elephant. They had to bring her the baby and place the marshmallow peanut through a small hole on top of her trunk.

Kyle was very excited to lead the safari. I love this picture of all the kids in hats looking for wild animals.

On good thing about the kids having WAY TOO MANY stuffed animals is that we had plenty of animals in the safari. Please excuse the extra clutter in some of these pics, but it did come in handy. I was able to make a rock for the large cat area out of something that did not get put away.. LOL!

Here the kids are looking at the snakes close up. I just bought a bag at the dollar store.

If you look in the distance you can see a zebra hiding behind those chairs.

The leopards are having some family time in the chair.

More animals that could been seen while on the safari.

Oh no, two of the big cats have escaped their cages. Be on the look out! Its much more impressive when you are a young kid. LOL

Kyle wanted a cake in the shape of a banana. I made a yellow cake in a long tube pan. I frosted the cake with light yellow frosting and then used a darker yellow fondant for the peel.

This picture cracks me up. I love how Kara is blowing out the candles too.
I will always remember this party fondly.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Party
Kara's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball Party was one of our favorites. The theme was definitely original and all of the kids had a great time.

The invitations themselves were different from any others we have seen. I made meatballs from brown cardstock and added spaghetti colored (off white) yarn. Most of the pictures from that party were accidently deleted by one of my children .. Grrr. I also could not find my orginal meatball and saying but I did recreate how I made the Meatball invitation on the party theme page here

We decorated the family room, kitchen and hallway with falling food made from poster board. We saw the paper pizza in an issue of Family Fun. You can see how we made them here on the party theme page.

We made more large food by recycling odds and ends. We used toilet paper tubes for a large bowl of macaroni and cheese. The giant orea is made from foam board, fiberfill and black poster board.

I made giant M & MS to be used in a game, and to be given at the end of the day with their treat bags
They were just made out of felt and fiberfill.
When the girls first arrived they were each given a craft foam visor. I had laid out a bunch of craft supplies like markers, paper, glue etc.. so they could decorate them with their favorite foods. I also had them sit in our recliner with a felt fried egg on top of them.

We played pin the cherry on the sundae. I made the large white bowl and cherries from poster board, and the ice cream from cardstock.

Another game we played was spaghetti tornado (based on the book) We took several long strands of yarn and wrapped them around our entire play area. Each girl had their own spaghetti strand that had to freed from the spaghetti mess. The first girl who freed their spaghetti without breaking it was the winner.

We also made a falling food obstacle course. The girls had to run from one side of the yard to the other with a blueberry (ball ) between their knees. They then put on a doughnut. (dollar store intertube) They picked up an extra large french fry (pictured) and carry it to the ketchup (a piece of red felt). Then they threw M & Ms in a basket that was on top of one their friend's head. They jumped over the pasta field (swim noodles), picked up the large plastic candy canes and then limboed under the green bean (another pool noodle) Oh how I wish I had my pics!

Inside the girls sat on a red circle tablecloth bought from the dollar store that looks like a giant tomato, or a piece of pepperoni. I bought a box of fruit O cereal and a bag of pipe cleaners from the dollar store. Each girl made their own cereal necklaces and bracelets.

She chose the spaghetti and meatball cupcakes from the HelloCupcake book as her birthday cake. You can see how I made them here on the party theme page.

Another treat we made was mini ice cream sandwiches from an idea I saw on Random Thoughts of a Supermom. Add a spoonful of ice cream between two nilla wafer and then roll in sprinkles. Kara chose birthday cake flavor ice cream.
When the party was over, they took home a felt M & M, their visor and a goody
How to make Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcakes
I made these adorable spaghetti and meatball cupcakes for our Cloudy party. I used the cupcake idea book, Hello Cupcake. If you are ever in the need for cupcakes, I highly recommend this book.
I made the cupcakes like normal, using the batter in a bag tip I posted awhile back. To quickly fill your cupcakes, pour the batter into a freezer baggie and cut one corner tip. You can then very quickly and evenly fill the cupcakes. I do push up on the corner with my pinkie when moving from cup to cup so there are very few drips.
Once the cupcakes have cooled, frost each one with a base layer of frosting and place them really close together as in the picture. To make the spaghetti, spoon a container of frosting into a baggie and snip off a very small corner. The recipe suggested adding a small amt unsweetened cocoa powder and 3 drops of yellow food coloring to make the spaghetti color. I just bought butter cream icing for one batch and used yellow food coloring in white icing for the other. Both batches did look off white like spaghetti. Using the frosting in the baggie, move back and forth over the cupcakes . This part was fun because you can be creative and you can't really mess it up.
I bought a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates for the meatballs. Since they are NOT cheap $3.79 for 12, I only bought one box. I knew we were going to have less than 12 at the party, so there would be one per child.
The sauce is strawberry preserves. My sauce was a little more clumpy than in the book, but it still looked like sauce. One thing that I have found in my years of doing children's parties, things do not have to be perfect because they do not notice. =) To make the parmesean, grate some white chocolate on top of the cupcakes. I realized that morning that I did not have any so I just left it off. Another detail the kids did not notice.
Tip on the sauce. I found that 3 or 4 girls did not want a cupcake with jelly on it. Make sure to leave a few without.
Here was the final results of one of the batches. I had 24 cupcakes, 12 with meatballs. I was happy with the results. They really are easy to make.
How to make a paper pizza
We saw this idea in an old issue of Family Fun. The idea was designed by FilthWizardry.com
Cut your toppings of of colored paper. I used light ornage cheese, beige mushroom, red pepperoni, and black olives
Using glue (or glue sticks) decorate your pizza with the paper toppings. We also used red crayon to make pizza sauce splotches
How to make a Meatball Invitation
This is a very simple invitation
Fold a piece of brown cardstock in half
If desired draw the shape of a meatball
Meatballs are not perfect circles so add a few bumps to the circle shape
Make sure to leave the crease of the cardstock intact so the invitaion is all in one piece
Hopefully I will find my original again. When I do, I will share what it said..
I added an off white colored pieces of year to both the front and inside to mimic spaghetti stuck on the meaball.
Pokemon Party
If you have a Pokemon lover in your house like I do, you know that the new games Pokemon Black and Pokemon White were released on Sunday March 6. My son has not let me forget it. A few years ago when my son turned 8 he wanted to have a Pokemon themed birthday party. At the time, there were no new games coming out, and there were no Pokemon party supplies available. I had to "make them all". We were talking last night and he told me that his Pokemon party was his very favorite birthday party that he has had.
With the release of the new games and there will be a new wave of popularity. I can imagine there will be many requests for Pokemon parties. While Pokemon Party supplies are available now at places like Birthday Express , I thought I would share our party ideas to throw that perfect Pokemon party.
The first thing I needed to do was come up with an invitation. I decided on Pokeballs. I cut two white circles and a red circle that were the size invitation that I wanted to send. I used one circle still in one piece as the back part of the invite with all the party information. For the front I cut the red circle and the 2nd white circle in half. I put them together to look like a pokeball. I used brads to attach them to the bottom circle. The half circles on the top were able move so the recipent could read the invite. For a final touch a attached a smaller white circle to the red half, but let it overlap on the white half to look like a real pokeball.
On the day of the party I had a large Pokeball made out of poster board on the front door welcoming the Pokemon Trainers.
To make the Pokeball pinatas I covered round ballons with paper mache
Once all of the children arrived, we played Pokemon Bingo. There is a great website where you can make customized bingo boards of all kind that you can find here The markers were red, blue and yellow squares that cut from cardstock.
I dont have a picture of the final pokeball. I painted plastic ball ornaments that I found at the craft store white and red to look like a pokeball. In each pokeball, I placed a picture cut out of one of the 20 pokemon that the kids learned about.
To find out which pokemon each child would be assigned, we played pass the Pokeball. (like pass the potato) Instead of being out, when the music stopped that was their pokeball.
You can kind of see what one looks like in this picture.
One everyone had their pokeballs they had to search the entire yard to find 3 more pokemon (printed on small squares) that matched the Pokemon in their Pokeball.

One tradition that I try to do at all my parties is take a picture of all the kids with part of the theme. This is my son wearing his special pokemon trainer hat holding Pikachu. I decorated the fireplace with red, yellow and blue streamers and Pokeball pinatas that I had made.
When the paper was thick enough and dried, I painted each ball white.
I painted the top half red and added the black details. Because they were decorations and not the acutal pinata, my son still has these a few years later
We then played Pin the Tale on the Pikachu. I drew Pikachu on poster board and hung it on the garage. We also play this game but with different themes. We have had pin the tail on the cat, pin the hat on Madaline, pin the cherry on the sundae and much more.
It was a gorgeous spring day. We went outside for a Pokemon lesson. I had my son pick his 20 favorite pokemon. I did a little research about those 20 and we had a mini lesson. The reason for the lesson was for the next game. Got to Find Them All.
To find out which pokemon each child would be assigned, we played pass the Pokeball. (like pass the potato) Instead of being out, when the music stopped that was their pokeball.

One everyone had their pokeballs they had to search the entire yard to find 3 more pokemon (printed on small squares) that matched the Pokemon in their Pokeball.
After games it was time to eat. I decorated the table with a blue tablecloth and alternated red and yellow plates and napkins. I can not remember the food we ate that day but I am sure I themed it out. LOL!
I made a Pokeball cake. It was an easy cake to make. Just make a circle cake and decorate with red, white frosting. The fine black line was writing gel.
As you can see in this picture, he LOVED his cake.
We opened gifts and then it was time to go home.
For their take home goodie bags, I had decorated colorful paper bags with the words.
Pokemon Master and added their name.
Some of the goodies I can remember were pencils from Oriental Trading that said Pokemon Master
Pokemon Stickers I bought from Ebay and thier plastic Pokeballs. They also each kept their trucker hats (that are worn on the show)
It was a very memorable day and he still remembers it fondly 4 years
I have hosted many types of childrens parties over the years. I have many ideas to share from all of them so if you would like to know more about anything on the list, just contact me.
